Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

My neighbor eats them too

you mean the predators right? LOL!
It's a valid question. I knew a GOB (Good Old Boy) once that ate possum and other assorted road kill. Well, eventually he got sick, and when he went to the doctor and they examined his liver, it was GREEN.

I'm a budding taxidermist that practices on roadkill, and even I know better than to TOUCH possums, let alone EAT them.

Hope you get to feeling like yourself fully very soon. Sounds like you are already getting swarmed by wee ones. Hopefully I'll have some running around here soon myself. For now its just seedlings

I LOVE getting swarmed by wee ones! Maybe the fact that I'm the oldest of 6 has something to do with that.

Here's a pic I snapped of the wee ones lol when I first moved them out of the bator. Bunch of different ones in there. The black Marans and bcms are all fraidy cats for some reason and the lav orps run up and peck me. Once they calm down maybe I can get some better pics of the Marans. You can see the silver cuckoo Marans on the front left with the huge white spot on HIS head lol.
That wierd looking one in the middle that looks blue with gold-ish face is the blue marans x golden cuckoo. There are two like that. There is more babies than this. I think I ended up with about 30 but I can't count them because they won't stop wiggling LOL

haha adorable! Now I'm starting to get excited!

I don't have an official LGD, but do have a Newfoundland/Australian Shepherd cross beast that is fantastic at warding off predators, including warning the chickens of overhead predators. Its funny to watch him communicating with the chickens, but they sure listen. He has this strange yip noise he makes and they all start growling and running for the hills. Here's Goliath as a 6 month old pup, he's now about 2 1/2 times this size now. Depending which side you see him from, he looks like a different dog.

Death on watering cans. grrr

now if you could just teach him to help water the chickens!! Love his coloring!

haha that's pretty funny since he loves water. If I did teach him, he'd just fill up the waterers and then jump in and 'pounce' on the water til it was all over. He's great guard dog, especially since he scares the crap out of people, I think it has a lot to do with the coloring, no one can figure out what he is and he's just so huge and has a bark that will make your insides rattle if you are too close. haha

He looks like a puppy in the pictures, and what a beautiful LSGD he is! Thank you btw for the support. This thread is so encouraging despite the truth of the hard knocks to be had with this breed. I keep watching these eggs and they are darkening up every time she lays! I keep hoping these spots they sport are going to settle as the final bloom. THAT would make me a feel as though I had a 'real' Marans.

yeah, he was about 6 months in this shot. I saw him on CL and went the same day to look at him. I knew the second I saw a photo of him in the ad he was coming home. The guy that had him had to move into Omaha and knew he wouldn't be happy living there, so was forced to sell him. From the first moment I got out of the truck, he acted like he belonged to me. He also came home and began his guarding duties within about the first hour. It was awesome!

Just got in from shutting up the animals for the night and collecting eggs. Plum filled up the whole egg basket tonight! The girls know its time to start hatching soon. Here's one of the eggs, this is under a spot light and with the flash on the camera. The egg is a deeper tone, but the flash washed it out a bit. Its not a shiny egg, it has a velvet quality to the tone, but was wondering what people thought of me trying to enter an egg show with some like these? Think they might do something?

I just mailed 5 of these for the show in Ohio next weekend. They are tiny little pullet eggs, not the darkest by any means but they are shiny/smooth and all look exactly the same. Don't expect to get a prize but sent them for fun and figured I ought to support the club.
