Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

That is a pretty egg! It looks kinda red. I love the reddish ones.
If I was gonna enter anything I would enter those big dark red eggs from my black pullet. They are nice and shiny. Some of my uber dark eggs aren't as shiny as I would like. Some are even pretty matte and the color rubs off easily, especially if I refrigerate them and they get condensation on them. My redder eggs' color doesn't seem to rub off as easily for some reason but some of the really dark red ones will a little if I put them in the fridge.
yeah, I have some birds that lay with a really rich red tone. I love them too! I haven't had any problems with the color wiping off....if I scrub, then sure, but not really noticed any more than any other of my marans eggs.

The eggs are red and I am green :)
Ditto here. I just think of it as something tickling or getting stuck or whatever. Those pellets aren't exactly 'coated' like aspirin now a days.

Red vs brown/cotta vs chocolate... what's the division?
haha too funny! To me, with the red vs, brown vs. Chocolate is differences in bloodlines and what depth of color the eggs have overall. I would say that chocolate is probably the most coveted, but do like all of them because they are all beautiful.

The chicken says: "I seeeee you!"

Ooh, I'm jealous, my maran's heads aren't nearly that pretty.
keep working on selecting birds with the best overall type and width and the head shape and width should follow. I get asked all the time by people that know I raise poultry for showing and preservation of genetic diversity what I watch for and look for in a bird when selecting. I tell them everything - all the way from toenail color to the very top of the head, it all matters.

just went and collected eggs for the night. Added them to the eggs from the last couple of nights, and its looking more and more like hatching seasons gonna get underway very soon! The silvers in front are in the light part of the laying cycle now since they didn't start laying til late fall, but hope they get their inkjets going again soon. Regardless, they will need work.

See those eggs in the middle Kim? Guess who those are out of! I'm pretty sure I found the stash of Lolita's first eggs! I did the dunk test and candled them and they are fresh. I'm very excited as she's been running with Big Boy....so its possible they'll be his. Not bad color eh? They keep improving!

oh, this is Lolita in case you can't remember

pretty much nothing, last night when I went out to bring the dog up to the garage for the night (yes, he's spoiled), there was just a dusting, if you could even call it that. Today it was really cold and the winds are between 40 and 50mph, so kind of a crap day. I'm freezing!

yeah our birds don't like to be out when it is snowing so they stayed inside the coop today, temps are going to be warming up the 2nd half of this week so we will start having some melting- the runs will be muddy.

Yeah, its supposed to do the same later this week, I hope it happens. Would like to be able to get some stuff done in the garden this week if possible!

Hi all,
Do any of you know about the BC Marans bred byBrian Parks of Fraiser Creek Farm in Corvallis, Oregon? I'm new to Marans and was hoping to get some nice birds for laying, not necessarily for breeding.
I do not know of him or his farm personally but have viewed his website, I live fairly close but have not been to his farm. His stock looks decent in the pictures and the eggs look lovely. The website literature says all the right stuff :) If you just want birds for laying, if his stock lays the colour in his pics, I don't think you can go wrong. If you think you may want to breed in the future, do your homework...... study the standard, go to the farm if you can and look at his birds and have your questions ready.
