Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Kim, the eggs are doing great so far, I might start up another Sportsman tomorrow as I have the first full. Must be a disease involved. If any of the BC hatch will post picture on the profile as they grow up. I only plan on using one Wheaten hen and she has decided it might be too cold to try and lay an egg.
haha do you have the disease too? Hatchitis?

Vicki, I received the Light Sussex eggs I am going to use in the fall making the Columbian Marans. Very large eggs and nice.

I think my favorite time with chickens is hatching the chicks off. The BC old hens are laying like Leghorns.
very good Don, where did you end up getting your Light Sussex from? Mine came out of PA and are pretty nice in terms of egg shape, size and frequency of laying, all winter they've done great.

OK I have two 'BCM" that obviously are having some color issues

These boys were hatched in Dec and I tagged them because they did not have any white feathers in their wings or tails as chicks or since then. I'm just wondering what we have going on here?

boy #1

and boy #2

Hi Mary! Could you post chick photos of them again? I know you have already but I can't remember what they looked like as chicks. It's my guess they have Wheaten in their backgroud and possibly some other variety of......? Also....do you a photo of the first cockerel that is more close up?

x2 probably has some wheaten or btb in the background. If they were yellow at hatch =more wheaten, if they were more golden at hatch I would say BTB. Probably a mix though so if they are black copper x either wheaten or btb they could have looked very black copperish at hatch even if they are carrying something else. I am always wary of bcm chicks that have a large spot of coppering on thier head or bodies somewhere. I had a few like that way back early on when I was starting out with the bcm Marans and they ended up looking BTB....lots of red.

I can try for some close up shots of them both. Looking through my albums I don't have pics of these guys as chicks. I bought them about Dec 16 and got two aged groups of chicks one 12 days and one 6 days; I didn't tag them differently for age; just tagged them for not having white in their wing or tail feathers as I thought that was a little odd. Most of this batch of chicks looked like normal BCM _except_ some of them did not have that much white on their faces; even the ones that had white in their wings. The chicks I posted previously were two that I hatched from shipped eggs in Nov. I'll see if I can get some updated shots of them too.

Not arguing or anything just trying to learn here. Why would that coloring indicate wheaten? I know that wheaten Roos would not look like that, so just not sure why that coloring would indicate wheaten. I know I have that often and just don't understand it.
