Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi everyone. Looks like I have about 150 posts to catch up on. Looks like I may be taking advantage of my broody black copper hen. We had a successful hawk attack (my first successful predator attack) and we lost my only blue splash hen. She was such a good bird... laid a beautiful egg almost every day. I am not ready for chicks yet- but I have 5 eggs from this hen that we lost and I am considering just to see what she would have thrown. I had my mutt roo over her- so they should be olive eggers or just mutts lol but either way, I wanted to see what she would throw for babies. We'll see.... I may have caught the hatching itch after all....

I've had a few with SOME coloring on there chest but never that much.

Exactly. They started out coloring up pretty young, too. So figuring that unless somebody here can give me a good reason to keep them around, these boys will be some of the first going to freezer camp. Might be fun to work on a new color but I totally do not have the room. Besides, I think the BCM are going to keep me plenty busy as it is.

Looks like I'll be hopefully setting eggs this next coming weekend Don. I have collected just certain eggs, from only a very small portion of my birds and have 45 eggs from this week. I'd like to have a full tray to set, so will collect this coming week as well. I'll have some Sussex, Columbian and B/B/S Wyandotte Large Fowl, Silvers, Blue Coppers and Black Coppers in the Marans. No birchens yet as they are not consistent on the laying yet.
Hopefully the last of the pens will be cleared for collecting here in the next few weeks. I have two pens left to sort and switch around.

Not arguing or anything just trying to learn here. Why would that coloring indicate wheaten? I know that wheaten Roos would not look like that, so just not sure why that coloring would indicate wheaten. I know I have that often and just don't understand it.

It seems like any time a BCM with too much color is posted somebody always claims wheaton in the line. I didn't think that was it, especially after seeing some other pics of black tailed buff, which is why I post these. Nonetheless, they are first on the cull list as I am only working with black copper in the Marans. What I think is interesting is out of about 20 chicks starting out, from 3 different breeders, I had 4 chicks that never had any white feathers in their wings or tails. I tagged them because I thought that was interesting. The response I got on the BCM thread was they usually turn out to be mossy females. Well, these two orange boys are two of them, one is a mossy female and the other one is another roo, that might be just a tad too dark, tho he does have color on his neck, I don't see any on his back yet.

Does any one have any cuckoo marans for sale I realley need a rooster I have 4 hens but no rooster I live in south Carolina
