Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nice looking girls there! Ahhh that little goat is sooo tiny. He's so cute! Are the dwarf goats really the Houdini's of the goat world? I heard they were really good at escaping their pens...

Thanks Lynette! I think on the goats it just depends what you use for fencing. The goats we have now are the smallest I've ever had and are only a problem when they are teensy and are trying to get close. Lobo, the buck is gonna be a year old here in a month and is still incredibly small. His dad was a midget Pygmy tho, so extra tiny
I'm getting so excited to see what I get out of my birds this year. I can hardly stand it. I am going to be staggering my hatches this time to to give me a few weeks lead time between to decide which pens or pairings I need more birds out of and also for culling purposes

The leaves sound like interesting bedding, we don't have anything like that here, but would be curious to hear if It works. Hoping by the end of the day to have the eggs in the incubator. Had a bit of excitement this morn at work tho, an armed man was on the loose in town, so town was swarming with cops, planes and helicopters looking for him. All I know is that I'm ready to go home

Yikes... stay safe!

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping to learn from you all. :)

I have what I thought was a blue copper Marans rooster and now I'm wondering if that's what he really is. I have some wheaten Marans hatching eggs going into the incubator tonight so I was glancing at pictures of blue wheatens and now I'm really confused. The pictures of blue wheaten roos that I'm seeing look very similar to mine, not what I would expect a blue wheaten to look like but what do I know. His brother (below), who I used to have, was a nice looking Birchen (with pale gold leakage through the silver).

They may not have come out of the same hen but were hatched from the same flock of birds out of the same batch of eggs. So just what color is this guy below because I

?

Thanks!

Beth

He is blue copper.... not wheaten. Wheatens can look very similar. Wheatens have a cinnamon triangle on the wing tip when folded. NOW after saying that the common consensus is your roo has wheaten influences in his coloring. The lighter color int he hackles for one thing, seems to be the give away.

Thanks, Donna! So do I assume correctly that he is poorly colored for a copper? Just trying to figure out which direction to go if he's worth using.
I can't tell much from the pictures. I have used roos with blended hackles and have gotten copper on my pullets in the next generation. Not sure I would cull for that alone. But I am new to this and I don't full know what the BAD is of using a roo with wheaten influence. It might be that you would be more brown under fluff color IDK. I would be more worried about type and size at this point in the game. Worry about the color later, but you don't want to use a roo that will send you backwards with color either.

I am sure that the more educated in Marans would be more than happy to help you if you could get some better pictures for the front top and sides of him.

This roo gave me good copper colored pullets most of the time.

And this guy gave me better colored cockerels.

BTW Blues SHOULD be the same color as Blacks.... but they come in all shades too.

Mornin all! Looks like maybe, just maybe in the next two days I'll be able to get the rest of my birds moved (some to temporary pens til I can get permanent ones built). I can't believe it might happen finally! If I can get out of work early, I'm almost certain I might be able to get it done today! I'll wait about a month for some of them to clear, but so excited! Also have someone coming to pick up the Ameraucanas and have several I will cull, so Spring cleaning is in full force!
