Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well, I didn't end up getting any real great shots today, its been really windy, so hard to catch them without feathers blowing everywhere. Some are rougher looking than others, but will be divided out after I finish moving all the males to where I want them.

This Splash is a beast and a half, probably about 8 1/2 to 9 pounds. I'll be using her to add size onto the blue coppers.

Luella on the far left facing away from the camera, and other blue and black coppers. Lobo, the teensy tiny buck decided to get in on the shot too

One of Luella's sisters in the background, looks just like her except with very little copper. More blue and black coppers in the front.

Some of the girls on the lawn

A first generation blue copper in the background. She has the same nice tone of copper as Luella, but not as much

Is there a best month to hatch Marans eggs in the Fall so that your hens are ready to start laying in Spring when they naturally would thereby saving on feed cost? What month do they normally start laying in the spring?
I had some hatch Mid September and they started laying in February, little pullet eggs. My earlier May hatched pullets started laying in October, all laid a large egg from the getgo, laid through the winter and are still laying. These were all offspring from the same single mating. This year I hatched my earliest a month ago so will keep records on that. The youngsters will start laying when they are ready, not during a particular month/time. Hope this helps!

Vicki, just sent you a PM regarding worming...........

Edited as I forgot to mention that I love your chunkers, someday I am going to have a farm full :)

Haha just saw your edit. I do love the chunky ones for sure. I have 24 hens in blue, black, or splash copper that I had running out and about today. It was quite the site, but impossible to catch them all together as they were all off exploring or hiding from the wind. There are still 3 hens that I'm debating on. Will look at them again tomorrow when I get out of work to see if they measure up to the others or not.

Thanks Shawn, looking forward to seeing what improvements can be made with this year's hatches!

Here's the final selections for the incubator tomorrow. Not all marans, and some are in project phase, so still need some work before I'll be happy with them
