Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

These eggs are so much better than the ones you can buy at the grocery store.
Hi rissamdc

and the Marans Thread. That's a nice batch of eggs you have there. Our family finds them very delicious. Compared to the other breeds we have, my twin daughters always go for the Marans eggs. They tell me they taste so much better. I had one today and the yoke was so rich. I think they are in a different class than the ones at the store. Ha!

Speaking of eggs, this little beauty came from my good layer today. I was just overjoyed seeing this in the nest box. I think it's the best egg she has laid for me yet.

I'm hoping to gather enough of these to begin incubating at the end of this week, barring any egg shows. Ha!

hahah indeed. I still need to count my eggs, and whatever I collect between now and tuesday, but I'm thinking somewhere between 130 to 150 should be set I would think. Nothing like starting hatching season with a bang

I will give them to her tomorrow after I finish getting the broody brooder ready for her and let her settle in overnight. We will be hatch buddies.....or should I say you and Darryl will be hatch buddies.

Good luck with your hatchings ladies.

I hope to be a week or so behind you. I just love hatching eggs — well the first couple of weeks are a bit boring, but the last week is pin and needles! I don't have 150 though.

That's bringing in the season right!

thanks! I think these next three weeks will fly faster than I can keep up with!

I don't have ANY Marans....nor Welsummers, etc.
BUT...I usually get ONE egg every-other day that is just as DARK as the eggs of a Maran !

Roosters (irrelevant at this point) Brown Leghorn, White Leghorn, Buff Orpington.

HENS: Buff Orpington, Barred Plymouth Rock, ONE "Easter-Egger" who lays BLUE eggs, and Rhode Island Reds.

Where the Devil is that DARK Brown Egg coming from ???

( MAYBE I should try to build a "Trap-Nest" ??? )

very strange......

maybe your barred rock is actually a cuckoo Maran?

Remember we were talking about egg color darkening from generation to generation? In the photo, the egg on the left is from the first blue copper hen coming from a splash to blue mating. The two eggs on the right are from two different blue copper pullets out of the same hen that laid the egg on the left. Looking forward to seeing how it will go this season for egg color.

just for fun, some of the blue copper pullet eggs going into the incubator hopefully tomorrow.

x3 lol. That was my first thought. Also if you got your hens from a hatchery source then they could really be mixed with anything too. I had a nice gold sexlink (golden comet) hen from a hatchery and she laid a large #5 egg on the Marans scale lol. One of my very best all time layers too.
