Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

You know.....I don't really have the answer for this. I have not worried too much about losing the copper as I seem to focus mainly on type, egg color and eliminating other faults and dq's. Don't get me wrong, I have longed for better colored females, but have yet to stumble across the secret.

I have some (two) BCM pullets that have great copper they came from a farm in N. Alabama. I also have a couple from a local breeder one has copper and one is black as night. Then the 3 blues with no copper but a different line. so if i try to see which crosses bring back the copper i may lose egg color until a bit down the road.. at least that is what i heard about mixing breeding lines... it would be interesting to put the no copper ones with the light colored roo and see what happens.. i'm working on the theory that it would reduce the melanization and allow copper to be expressed.

LOL! I guess, but in my experience, these chicks do not grow to be what one would think as Vicki suggested above, but it has been my experience that they lay some lovely colored eggs if that is what a person is after.

I hatched three of those with red heads recently, all males, and all mossy. I won't be keeping them for sure.

Well, the first chick is out and a bunch more have pipped, so hoping for some 'popcorn' action tonight! Looks to be a black so far, kind of hard to tell at the moment since they are still damp.
