Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I guess I have to email myself the photos so I can post. Can't add pictures from the iPad. Darn it!

IF you got your chicks from a hatchery, it may be almost impossible to tell them apart. Hatchery Cuckoos can be clean legged and yellow legs too. Might have to wait till they lay eggs.... but then again the cuckoos are not known to lay a dark egg. Might always be just a guess. The barring on BR is not as good and heritage birds so it can look cuckoo too.

I learned early to NOT hatch my Cuckoos and BR at the same time..... same with Olive Eggers and Marans, they can look the same too.

ok I am going to try to post some pics... these are my two week old black copper marans. They do have leg feathering but it appears that my big EE nibbled them off, especially this one. I think this is a female at the moment(hope). She has some white around her eyes and a spot on each upper wing. Small comb that is black. Is the white ok on her? your thoughts on sex.

next pic is a roo I beleive. He has a gold patch above one eye and a bigger pink comb. Your thoughts,.

Barred Rocks also have the white dot on their heads.

Very much lacking on the sleep here, storms rolled through last night and into the morning- of course our Aussie becomes a nervous wreak and kept DH and myself up since 1:30 am

Going to set another small batch of eggs today, trying to adjust the humidity level- think we ran it to high for the first 18 days and it caused problems with the hatch. Before we had to change out the thermostat, humidity was kept no higher than 35% and raised at day 18 to 50-55% and we did pretty good hatches.

Sounds like you've stumbled onto something that might help some others that have had trouble hatching out Marans in the past, I may try it when I incubate call duck eggs with the marans next time around,,, thanks for experimenting for everyone !

Best of luck to you on your next hatch !

Best of Luck to you too on your hatch !

Tomorrow is lockdown here, hoping for some Blue's out of this go around, switched Roos to increase the possibilities,  time for a little color !!!

:) Thanks Ray! I hope you have a great hatch too!

What humidity levels do the ducks incubate at? My sister just did her first ever incubation with ducks and hatched out 3 of 6. The 3rd one was failing to thrive so was culled, but she said she had to keep the humidity extremely high for the ducks.

I have one black  pullet with no copper , i also have 3 blues that are not showing any copper.  I am wondering how I can get the copper back..  I have one BCM roo that has very light hackle feathers i was wondering if i should use him with the pullets..?

oops sorry i meant to quote the other comment you made about losing the copper...

You know.....I don't really have the answer for this. I have not worried too much about losing the copper as I seem to focus mainly on type, egg color and eliminating other faults and dq's. Don't get me wrong, I have longed for better colored females, but have yet to stumble across the secret.
