Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I do not know but I bet that the answer will come shortly. I am having trouble understanding the blue wheaten gene and the wheaten gene. I have a wheaten baby in my adolescent group which was born light wheaten but is breaking out with dark blue and red feathers and he seems to have Dominique pattern on his wings. He is quite striking. I also have a very red hen that was born with wheaten colors and is now breaking out with the most beautiful red and gold . I never knew Mar ins came in such vibrant colors . I use to think Marians were Gold and black.

I am learning a lot watching these babies grow.

I have not found the copper dots or markings to be a very common thing, but so far the ones I have had do color in well for me here. This does not mean that will be the case for everyone that has them, just depends on the genetics behind them. Here is a chick that came out of the incubator on Friday night that has a spot by the eye and have another with a dot on the middle of the head.

Here is another chick I had last year, this is now one of my best Marans, named Luella. Another photo of her at about 6 months old in the next photo.

Very excited about my "new to me" birds. They've finally settled in and are laying nicely, if still a little sporadicly. Pictured here with a few CL eggs and an Olive egg.

All destined for the incubator- in fact, they are hatching right now (this is obviously an older picture of eggs they layed that first day I brought them home).

I have wonted to get me some marans ever since I saw the eggs they could produce !
So that answers the age old question - the egg came first....
Ok for many years I have tryed to get a hold of me some marans without any luck untill yesterday I was at a chicken show here in Alabama and I saw a splash marans roo and I felt like it had to go home with me then I found the man who owned him and we came to a deal which made us both happy and the roo found a new home along with his three splash hens and today they gave me my first egg, this is one happy chicken owner.
