Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Need some help friends!

I can't get the humidity up past 67% in my sportsman. I have 3 trays of water in there and 2 sponges leaning up on end in all 3 so that the water wicks up and the air flow can push it out and around. What else can I do?

I have 4 vents open almost half way and the others are closed.....should I do something different with the vents maybe?

Even when I spritz the eggs with water it doesn't raise it.

Whats the deal with random copper/brown splotches on chicks. Is this common and will it go away as adult feathers come in? Blk/Blu copper marans.
I have had several chicks hatch with this, but my luck has been different than Gilavina's and the ones I grew out with the spots did not have good coloring when mature, they have always lacked in copper or shown none. Cute chicks by the way!

what day are the eggs on? I just usually push it to 65 if its an all marans hatch and then when they chicks pip, they bring it up and keep up the humidity to 70 or more easy, but you are hatching geese too eh?

I'm working with an old 1202 here, only 2 vents with them each half closed and one of the media sold for the tray I run at 65% (with my house @45%) I would try closing more vents if I were you

I'm guessing you want it higher for the goose/Marans experiment?

good luck

I got this little tid bit from the MOAC website.
Hope it helps.

"The genetic factor responsible for this plumage is written (e+).It is accompanied by the presence of recessive golden (s+) gene to give this Golden-salmon variety that is (e+/e+, s+/s+) and (e+/e+, s+/- for the hens).

On the other hand when the savage (e+) color is accompanied by the complementary "silver" (S) factor dominating gene and linked to sex (remember that this gene is frequent for the Marans), we obtain the Silver-salmon variety i.e (e+/e+, S/S) and (e+/e+,S/- ) for the hens."

Here is the link to that page where I found this.
