Here is a quick photo of the little blue. I don't know if you can see what I see and this photo does not show you exactly how I see it. It is gray and very overcast this morning......the barring is very different from Ghost barring that I have seen. It is now turning white. When she got here a few weeks ago she was blue with what I thought was Ghost barring, but now that it is turning white I am thinking different. Am I right or is it just wishful thinking?
What do you think?
She is just now a tad over 2 months old.

Here is the solid Splash male and a peek of the other Splash pullet that came with them. I got 4 birds total, I rehomed one yesterday to a lovely lady looking for pretty eggs.....the pullet had clean legs, but she was very pretty. She was colored very similar to the male, very unlike the other pullet who reminds me more of my splash copper birds with more defined blue coloration and flecking throughout her body.

Hi all, wow I can't keep up with this thread and I've been crazy busy with hatching, selling chicks, rearranging birds and on and on! I did catch a few posts discussing the non-layers, ie free-loaders. I have one Black Copper Marans hen from last year that has yet to lay. She is at least a year old. Now it is possible that she laid early on when I had all the BCM hens in one pen, but I have had them all separated for a couple of months and no egg from her. I am trying to get enough offspring from each of the 6 hens I have (5 now, one already proved herself to be only a layer since she was throwing clean legged chicks) to evaluate them. Now I am wondering if this hen should go anyway since she is such a poor layer. After all, laying eggs is a big reason we keep these birds! But I am also wondering if maybe all the switching around has just upset her enough that she won't lay. She had been in one of my 4'x 4' pens by herself and being by herself alone may cause some problems--so I since switched her with another BCM and she is back in the big main pen with only the male and a blue Ameraucana. I'm thinking if I don't see an egg from her within a month, I should give her to my friend who wants her as a pet. Thoughts?

Sorry, had to go to work and unload freight, but am back now. First, I can't believe how big these birds are already! Second, on that dark pullet, it does look like she has cuckoo in her background since they can be used to work on blues. You'll just have to watch her close. I've had some in the wyandottes that will come out really well cuckoo marked, even tho they hadn't been used for years and years to make the crosses. So, would not surprise me if the same were to be true for the Marans.
There are subtle and not so subtle differences in the copper and the solids, but most would not notice, because they are pretty slight, but they are there. So, you have just 3 there with you? The Splash cockerel, and the 2 pullets?

I got mine (new to me) but used and rebuilt a couple years ago from a Welsummer breeder friend here on BYC. I love it!

I understand that the larger the water surface area the better the humidity, so I have been using large shallow pans for more surface area with the sponges. I have 1 pan on the top shelf where it should be and 1 pan on the first tray and another pan on the second tray since they are not being used right now.

I closed the top vents......I'm going to go and change it to the bottom vents.
Will keep you posted.

Also interested to see how your duck eggs do. Hope it goes great for you.

you may have done this already but have you tried a different RH meter/sensor. If you have a bulb thermometer that is accurate you can do wet bulb depression using a shoelace, this is a pretty accurate method of getting RH instead of the black box that is your sensor..

so on my black coppers the copper colors on the chest area is not a good thing or on there necks and backs? my roos have copper but the whole feather is copper im new to coppers so im asking silly questions lol

Copper on the chest is not a good thing on pullets or cockerel, on a male less than 10% is considered ok, but prefer mine to have none. On a cockerel, they will get color on the hackles, saddle feathers and wing bows, and can be a solid copper, but more than likely on the hackle and saddles, they will have an edging of black. If you can post a photo that would help to determine what you have. There are also issues such as mossiness and etc to consider, so without a photo, it makes it harder to know exactly what you have.
