Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well I'm hoping at least one of my bcm is a pullet the other is deffinently a roo lol crowing like crazy. Getting his tail feathers to his cobm is so big lol. The other isn't so much and dost crow so I'm really hoping pullet. I don't know yet though since there r no eggs yet there both 7 months old. I'm getting frusterated though caise I haven't had one egg yet. Even my bo isn't producing and she's 5 months. Extremely loosing my patience. Any tips to get these birds to lay eggs. Freerange all day but I follow them around and no eggs. How can u tell is there a sign when they ley eggs
With marans the longer they hold out normally the dark the eggs will be when they do lay. 7 months is not uncommon. Mine normally start getting mated on a week or 2 before they start laying. This is just something I have noticed. So if there is mating going on for a while then they are hiding them or just havn't started quite yet. Maybe lock them up for a few days and see if you get any eggs, You may be suprised. Not all birds start laying at the same age, some are 5 months some are 8 months.

did the roos that you have hanging out together grow up together? if not how did you get them to tolerate each other?
They are all hatchmates or siblings. I do have issues sometimes when I put one up to get him ready to show. Since they are up for a month or longer sometimes They get unaquainted with the others so it takes a while for them to be accepted again when the show season is over.

I usually just pick them up at night and put them up with everyone else on the roost. When they all wake up together it is like nothing ever happened.

The worst thing that ever happens is when one is breeding a hen and another runs up and pulls him off by his comb or neck.

wish mine were that good; they try to pull the girl out from under the other roo!

Two or three more hatchings then I think I will be done with test mating for the season. Seems like I have youngsters everywhere!!! Seeing some overcoloured boys and a few mossy girls but overall I think all is going well. Got to spend some time after work today taking some pics in the sunshine and our unseasonably warm weather!

I think I am going to really like this girl, she is from my first or second batch:

Younger girls from the 3rd or 4th batch:

Shade!! The older boys have it figured out. There are actually 3 girls in the pic. too, just hard to see:

Yumm, Greens..........

Thanks.. One of the things i'm worried about is taking one out for a week or so and then putting him back in. Most of mine grew up together except for two of them and i'd love
to put those two in the batchelor pad, even though twizzler has 14 hens he pulls out many feathers and they look raggy but I am all out of pens unless i put him in with the
other boys, and i think that's probably not an option.. He IS bigger than them and 2 months older though.. I don't know..

There is a small animal & consignment auction next weekend, Saturday, May 18th, in Kendall, WI. Is anyone planning on attending that or would be willing to meet up there that would ahve some marans for sale?

Anyone care to comment on the sex/quality of these two 3 week old chicks. I was told Bev Davis lines....

I am new to Marans and wanted to share some pics of them. I ordered 12 chicks from Whitmore Farms and I got 5 Blue and 7 Black Copper Marans.. They were born around 4-8-13
Out of the 12 chicks I belive that there are 4 that do not show much feathering on their feet
At what age do the roos start showing with Marans? I have Welsummers as well and I know for sure who is a roo or not by now

The Blacks were kinda hard to get pics of due to I have 6 Australorp pullets and some others that I am brooding right now in the same pins.
