Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Is anyone planning on going to this this weekend? I decided to go here vs the animal auction, even tho it's a 2 hr drive difference. Chickens are cheap enough, I'm not worried about trying to get them cheaper at an auction. I'm used to paying $100-250 for one rabbit, so $2-5 for a chicken is nothing! LMAO!

Well Donna,

Tonight is the start of day 21 and some of my own stock are already out. So, we'll see what ends up happening with those shipped eggs. I ended up with 23 left for lockdown, which I didn't think was so bad for shipped eggs. Now to see if they will hatch alright.

I could hear them when I got up this morning, and could see three then, now only a couple of hours later there are at least a dozen that I can see and tons pipped or zipping. Not sure how many are in the sections of shipped eggs as they are closer to the back of the middle tray, so can't see as clear. I thought I had put the tray in with them in the front, but my birchen pen is in the front. So, hopefully they are all doing fine!

Vicki,,, I'd like your input / opinion !!!

Do Black Coppers from a Blue Copper to Black Copper breeding reproduce "good black" or should they just be used in breeding for Blue Coppers ???

Is their genetic black of poorer quality than a black from black to black breeding ? Does their black differ ?

And,,,, have a GREAT hatch !!!

my guess is that you will have a bird with little coloring. All the ones here I've had that have tons of color end up having the least amount of color

OH... I got a few pics of my Splash roo that is growing out. Not sure what if anything I am going to do with him. He has a little bit of copper on his hackles and wings. He is still young.... also the low man on the totem pole in that pen. My Splash LRW roo is HUGE next to him and they are the same age. I AM keeping the Wyandotte for sure LOL

Ignore the mess

I have never seen his tail angle. He was living in the nest box prior to this move inside. He was hiding from the other 2 roos. His comb points have some ODD serrations like on every point. Never seen that before. I might not breed him because of that. He has nice feathered legs and I like his coloring. He is from Pinks Roo.

This guy is his sire.
