Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi Pinkchick
here is that one girl (pics 1 and 3)and her elusive sister(pic 2). The one with the copper on the hackles has less leg feathering. The Splash with no copper has more. My splashes had a smaller body type than my blue coppers.I prefer the bigger body type myself. I also am finding they seem to be trying to peck out toe feathering on each other. Any critiques gladly accepted. Hoping to learn more :)

this is my young cockerel does he look good for breeding he 4 mouths old he has a lot of copper on his chest side and back if yall could let me know what y'all think I would most great full

He does have much too much copper for normal breeding, in fact it is a huge amount of copper. A pity you are not close, i would have been interested to experiment with him with my hens that are showing no copper at all to see if I could get it back. However, are you sure that he is actually a blue copper and not a part wheaten. I accidentally crossed a BCM and a wheaten recently (i mixed up the eggs and got one that should not have been put in the incubator) the little roo came out with flaming copper all over.. much like yours...

that much copper would only give you very mossy and over colored pullets and roos. that is too extreme for what Don was talking about.

I've done some experimental breeding this year with a mossy Black Copper hen that lays an extremely dark egg, and a "mahogany" male, to see if the dark male would "cover up" the mossiness in the female; I've hatched out several thus far, and all have been mossy (females) or have way too much copper in the breast (males).

That's cool I'm not in it for the pure breeds i just have them because they are beautiful and I love the dark eggs I have a young marans mossy I hope she will lay the very dark eggs

Quote: Oh, thank you for saying this. I posted pics of some of my cockerels about a month ago and the critique I got here has really helped me sort out what I have and narrow down who to keep. But one issue that's come up since is that some of them have some white on their shank feathering. Seems like the ones with the most feathering and in my "I may want" pen of course!

If anyone is looking for a BCM that came from a really nice dark egg from a dark egg project I'm working on, I need to rehome some boys, they're running rampant with my layers flock and my hens have had enough! I hate to process these boys, they're really nice...except one, but the others have some nice things going on. PM me if anyone is interested.

When I can get some updated pics of the one's I've narrowed it down to, I'd like some input again. This is such a great forum. I learn something every time I read it.

Quote: What about the Black Copper Marans from a Blue Copper/Black Copper mix?

I have a Black Copper cockerel that comes from that color mix and he has too much copper on his chest. I was thinking he needed to go but then I read they could help in the dark egg??? I'm working on a dark egg project with a friend. It's hard to not want to pick the closest to SOP to breed but I know it's all about the egg for this project.
