Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi all, I would like some honest input on my birds I'm posting. I see a few flaws, but curious about them overall. These are my Blue copper and splash born in April. My Roo has an obvious flaw of no tail :) That was due to feather pickers I had in the flock. Even though they're gone, I can't get it to grow back. Seperated him for a couple of weeks, but he just got hurt trying to get back to his hens, so I gave up. He has amazing toe feathering. All on the outside toe and I love how big he is. Not sure about his hackle feathers. But I love how his build is. He was the biggest out of all the roos. My pullets either have alot or a little feathering, it varies. A couple have what looks like eye leakage. So I would appreciate your input here. Can learn unless I better myself :)
He does look as though he is the rumpless type, however, he is YOUNG, give him some more time. If he is going to get those tail feathers back he will. If they have been picked at by others, my bet is, he will grow them back after or during his next molt. Would really love to see more photos of the very light colored hen in 4th photo. :)

Hello all I have a question about my rooster I think he is a blue copper but I read the other day that if he has white feathers on his feet he may be a wheaten can somebody tell me if this is true or false thanks

Hmmmm.....never heard that one, but wheaten is very possible in many lines of Marans.

Sometimes, they will show a white feather in the shank feathering. Wait until molts to make culling decisions and most importantly wait for other to come by and also give their opinions. :D

umm not sure if it was my post that you read, but i was specifically referring to discriminating between black tailed buff and wheaten... well not sure if it was but just in case :).. thought i'd better mention it.

Question for the more experienced, since I just got my first BCM recently, and some blues too.  BCM means black copper marans, so where do the BLUE coppers fit?  Does BCM mean either blue or black copper?  I know the blue is a dilution of the BCM and you can keep both in the same breeding pen...and get both colors from that.  My question comes regarding the blue marans, and splashes.  I understand the genetics of blueXblue begetting 25% black, 50% blue, and 25% splash.  The splash I am aware of are primarily a whitish bird with bluish splotches.  I bought a pullet from a flock that has blues, both blue and black coppers, and splash marans:  she is what I will call a blue splash.  Blue background with darker blue splotches.  Opinions?

You are right, Blue Copper is a dilute of Black Copper, but they are still Blue Coppers and you do not want to breed any Black Coppers that resulted from the blue to blue matings back into your BLACK COPPERS, they will mess with the black. Splash are Blue Coppers but referred to as Splash Coppers or Splash if coming from the solid BBS Marans varieties. :) No need to call Splash, blue splash as they are already blue. They carry 2 copies of blue (2 copies of blue is responsible for the splash look and white-ish feathers with darker blue splotches), blue only carries 1 copy of blue which dilutes black to blue. :)

I can't remember where I read it I look on the web about blue marans and blue copper marans it was some thing I was thinking about I fairly new to the marans so I'm still trying to figure thing out. Question what would you need to breed to get a salmon marans

Thank you pinkchick :) He does look part Araucana here lol! I will try to get more of that light one. Would she be a Copper Splash? I also have a Splash with none of that coppering. Couldn't get a pick of her today, she was being camera shy with me clicking away. Thank you so much for your input :)
Also, I can't find a SOP of the Blue Coppers. Is there anywhere I can find them. I'm wondering about my roos hackle feathers if they're a DQ

Hi all, I just started with chickens as a retirement pastime (and eggs of course) several months ago. I have 2 little FBCM's not quite 3 weeks old. They are doing well in the fall Texas weather in the 80's days and 60's nights. I was worried about the cool temps after my research but they are happy healthy precocious little pullets and I am enjoying them. I got them with a Americana chick a few weeks older than them and they are just like Mom and Chicks. It's a blast to watch them. I'm happy with the new thread, I just want enjoy the process..
