Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

There are two very dark blue(just a bit of copper on one of their wings), one black with copper coming through on the neck and wings, and five splash. I was convinced the black was a roo up until a week ago when the 2 splash roos became very red combed and the black stayed pinky like the pullets! I'm planning on keeping one roo for my flock of varied breed hens and 3 of the pullets. It's very hard selling any of them though. I become so attached and was in tears yesterday as I sold one of the pullets and one of the roos. I'm sure others feel this same way, especially when you hatch them yourself!
I have Marans and Bresse eggs in the incubator now. Since I caponize my extra roos, I don't have them to sell. They end up in the freezer. I have BBS Marans as well. Some are copper and some are Birchen.

I had to educate myself on caponizing, that is pretty amazing for meat bird production. I learn new stuff all the time on BYC! We always laugh that our rooster soup is never quite delicious, you've got the tools for delicious rooster soup! Good luck on your hatch! I've just started a group of mix birds and 1 cream legbar in my bator, oh the anticipation!

Thanks. I have one Marans/Orpington cross capon that weighs 10 1/2 pounds. I was going to hold him and butcher him for an Easter dinner, but he isn't really putting on any additional weight, so I may butcher him sooner.

I have 2 lovely little hens, bit bigger than a bantam, they are bob-tailed, grey-brown body, necks are a speckled ginger color, small combs, bit like small rose-comb, very docile, and good little layers, have had them only a few weeks, and was wondering what is their breed....hope you can help...Fowlo from down under, Australia...n.s.w
