Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Candled my eggs- day 10. Looks like I have a few clear eggs- but hard to tell- I kept them in anyway. This is my first time hatching so I was wondering if they are totally clear- does that mean they were never fertilized? They were shipped also- something to do with that?

Clear eggs don't mean they are not fertile. Sometimes they just don't start for some reason and shipping add more issues.

I think the only way they work well is to pack the foam shippers in other packing material, giving a second cushion. The foam against the outside shipping box transfers any shock the box gets directly to the eggs held so tightly in the foam.
I just hatched 3 of 15 Isbar eggs that were shipped in homemade foam shippers. He used the plugs from the holes around the outside of the block of eggs and corrugated softer foam top and bottom.

It can mean infertile, scrambled from shipping, or very early embryonic death. If you break them open to look, if there is a blood ring they were fertile but died early on. They are hard to see in a Marans egg but blood rings are clear in lighter colored eggs.

Maybe they are carrying recessive white?

attached is the first snap of the two chicks that hatched yesterday, from birchen parents -- yes, they most likely are carrying recessive white!

there is also one black chick that has hatched, and three eggs remain unhatched, will be watching closely today to see if they produce anything!

My lovely BBS Marans, they are 7 weeks old. I was lucky enough to get 7/8 hatch rate shipped from Florida to CA with 2 Roos and 6 Pullets. They are delightful and beautiful!

With regard to the vulnerability of Silkies to predators because of their large pom-poms, I carefully trimmed the side feathers on the head to give them a chance to see a hawk, works well... my hens were totally free range and I had lost a couple to large hawks, but after their trim, lost no more.. they dashed to safety... hope this helps to save these sweet little birds..
