well no electric up at my coops so not an option. I will have to say several of the girls in the layer house are pretty ancient and destined for the soup pot soon. All of my birds have been in a hard molt this year, including the pullet that hatched last Jan. so have been giving the benefit of the doubt for a bit. But their time is coming sooooon.....

I solved the no electric problem with mega amounts of 12 gauge extension cords. I think I had to run about 200-250 feet. Not the best option, but it has been working.

They're very slow to start laying again after their molt, but I'm starting to get a few eggs.

Not sure. About 75 Marans hens, I guess? And the roosters to go with them.

Us too with the cords, but only 75 feet from the pump house outlet. It does the job.

Whoa! 75! I guess a few eggs can be exciting when coming out of a molt or reaching laying eggs, but not on an average day. Is this normal for your girls at this time of year? Where are you living. I am in MD by the beach. It is not freezing during the day yet and the hens are giving one less a week at times.

My son and I will both be receiving our Cukoo Marans in April. We would love the Black or Blue Copper, but no one near us has them and we are only getting a few. We may ask a lot of questions because the breed is new to us. Thank you all for being so helpful.

I've got 8 marans pullets 6 months old. 3 are broody. I get 1-2 one day then 3-4 the next. A total of 37 layers and I'm getting 6-16 a day. Jars to fill orders with that kind of fluctuation and unreliable numbers. Hurry up molt and daylight. Lit the coop a month ago and almost all the birds are done molting. All we need is time.

I'm in north Texas and our weather is all over the place. It alternates between hot, freezing, rain, snow, and sun. I think it has everyone confused. It has ME confused.

But I'm up to about 8 or 10 eggs a day now. Hopefully most of them will be laying pretty soon. Especially after Christmas when the days start getting longer.
