Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks, for the info. I am interested in the Black Copper Marans, still at the research stage. I keep seeing some advertised as black and blue. Soon, I will be trying to find good breeder(s) to get stock from.

If you want to work only with the BCM they sound NOT be from a Blue mating. You can and should use blacks in the blues but not vise versa. I use blacks in my blues because I don't like to breed for splash. I will breed blue to blue but always have blacks in the pen too.

I am noticing that a lot of people seem to breed the Black Coppers. I own a small flock of Cuckoo Marans, simply because I like the color pattern. I'm hoping to expand into pure Black Marans this year. I ordered my stock from Cackle Hatchery, so I know that I will have a long way to go to reach SOP. But I will mostly be focusing on production and darker egg color since my variety is lacking in both apparently. My girls are about 8 months old and still haven't seen an egg. :(

Also, I've been wondering about the combs. Does this roo count as having 5 points or does the front and back part of the comb count as points too? THANKS!

Here's some pics of my flock:

The back part of the comb is called the blade and doesn't count as a "point." I count five distinct points.

Thanks so much for clarifying that! I thought I'd heard something about a blade but was trying to figure out if my roos had good combs. Think my maran boys had the best combs out of all of my hatchery birds, just wish they didn't have those spriggy little tails. Also, has anyone ever seen a roo with wrinkled up wattles? The other maran has those and I don't know what caused it. He is the less dominant of the two and smaller than the one pictured but his wattles are all shriveled up.

Looking for a reputable breeder of Cuckoo Marans in CA. Preferably birds that lay exceptionally dark eggs. I would like to buy some eggs or pullets. No hatchery/feed store stock please. I am in La Grange, CA, but will pay for shipping if necessary.

Don't mind me... I'm just lurking in here, trying to learn a thing or two. I'm a newbie to BYC, have a black copper roo and a blue marans hen, among a few others. Not sure of their quality yet. She's a good girl though, and he's quite a gentleman.
