Ladycat just had a person with 100% hatch rate with her shipped eggs on the hatchalong thread.

That's amazing! Obviously I don't have my hopes up for that, shoot.. I'd be happy with 50%! From the ones I could see into, most seemed to still have good attached air cells. Now my CCL eggs that arrived the same day were like 90% detached cells. So, we shall see long about April 23-24th!

If you pack them in live bird shipping boxes (like from Horizon) instead of flat rate shipping boxes, I have heard they will fare better.

We don't ship live birds, and most of my customers won't pay the express shipping required on a live bird shipping box.

50% is a good hatch on shipped eggs IMO. We've had 85+% from OR to FL and the aforementioned 100% to NC, but those are the exceptions.

Where are you finding $2-$3 chick boxes? Please tell me! I need to order some more right now. The cheapest I have found is around $5.50, that includes the pad for the bottom, from Cutler Supply. They are the 25-chick boxes. Maybe they are cheaper if you buy a huge quantity. I've only been buying 10 at a time.

I don't think you'd be able to find space in a 25-chick box for many eggs if they are wrapped and packed. It is much smaller than a large flat-rate box. If you used the larger adult bird shippers from Horizon, you'd be able to pack them well with plenty of space. That's how someone I know got some rare breed eggs shipped to her a couple of years ago, to increase the chances they would not get shook up and hatch well. Yes, it is more expensive. Might as well buy live chicks, if you ask me. People think buying hatching eggs are such a bargain. It is not, it is a gamble.

The post office stopped offering 1-day true Express shipping for live birds. Now they call it "Priority Express" and it is usually 2 days but can be longer. Or you can ship "Priority" and sometimes that takes 2 days as well, but can be longer.
