Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have both cuckoo and black coppers...for being the same breed they sure do have some major differences.
I bought cuckoo before I did any research, and I bought them from a hatchery. I thought all marans laid "chocolate eggs". The personalities of my cuckoos and black coppers are very similar, very docile, sweet birds with good roosters, but there is a lot of difference in everything else. I think a lot of cuckoo have been crossed with barred rocks through the years, especially by the hatcheries. I would love to have a full bodied, purebred cuckoo that still maintained the darker egg color

Agreed. Although I love the colors and feathered legs of the blk cp. We have one roo with a lot of copper and wild eye brows... we call him axel rose. He even sounds like he could pull off "welcome to the jungle"

If I could only keep one breed of bird, it would be the cuckoos. My rooster is by far the best rooster I have ever had, the girls are sweet, lay a ton of eggs, and will brood if I let them. The black coppers are going to take a lot of work, but will be very rewarding when I start producing quality birds

I can't imagine having to choose one breed. I have a bunch. I love the colors and features of each one. I limit myself to only chickens with colored eggs though. Gotta make a limit somewhere.
I have a lot of breeds, too, but the ones I'm working on are the BCM and BBS Ameraucanas. I got some great AMs this year, but my BCM need some work
