Is there such a breed as a Cuckoo Maran? I just picked up 2 pullet chicks from my feed store, but couldn't find the breed in the "Breed" list. Is this a general breed with several subspecies?

Marans is the breed, and cuckoo is the color/variety

Cuckoo look very similar to barred rocks, it is just a color pattern however there are more differences than just color among the varieties of marans.

Thanks! Wasn't sure, lol. But if color isn't the only difference between "varieties", then wouldn't that make them a subspecies? Not an expert by far, just curious how species and whatnot work with chicken breeds. Thanks for the help. You guys are awesome!

That is, I have heard, yet to be established. They are a new breed to USA, I have gathered, and I have only been working with them a little over a year. We started with cuckoos.

Well, Marans they are, lol! They are awesome to watch and get along well with the other Barred Rock chicks...almost like they were all siblings. Maybe at this age they don't seem to mind too much. But they're so much fun to watch and they're here to stay! They were not part of my original flock of chicks...had to take 2 BR back because they were boys (not allowed where I live). So I picked these 2 up to make up for it.

They DO seem to have less of a problem being touched or held than my BRs. From what I can see...Marans are the coolest, lol. Thanks.
