Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

One of the blacks with an Am Cockerel. He was so pretty I hated to rehome him.

Oh he is beautiful, they all are! When I went to Sawmille I got 5 Marans, and 8 Ameraucanas. I bought all of each breed that he had that day. I can hardly wait to see what I end up with once I can tell. How did you do as far as how many you bought ended up hens/roos? We have 3 coops, plus we are building another this week. So I am not too worried about roos. However 3 is a good number on the high side.

Do you live far from Live Oak? I have been there a few times. I had 21 of his, Marans and Ameraucanas. At first I bought straight run BCMs. I ended up with a couple of cockerels, one of them was the Black Ameraucana, that was an accident in the picture with the black Marans I posted above. I was not supposed to have a Ameraucana. That batch of chicks was when I learned about rats. A rat killed three of those babies and wounded one. I ended up with a mystery chicken, I think it is an Araucana with a tail, a black Ameraucana, a one wing BMC cockerel (a rat victim) and two BMC pullets. I am down to three pullets from that batch. I rehomed the two cockerels. The second time I went I bought 7 older Ameraucanas, they were all supposed to be pullets but I ended up with two cockerels in that batch. I have rehomed one blue one already and have a home for the lavender. So that left me with 5 Ameraucana pullets. My third trip I got 9 more young chicks BCMs, Splash, Blue, Black Marans. Two cockerels in that batch. I still have them, one Splash and one BCM. I will probably rehome them soon because I have 3 Cream Legbar cockerels and one Bielefelder cockerel in the new chicks. I have 3 Bielefelders and 17 Cream Legbars. I am going to get 4 more Bielefelder pullets. Cream Legbars and Bielefelders are autosexed. Very helpful.... I hate having to rehome the cockerels that I raise from straight run babies. Roosters get a raw deal. So I have 17 chickens from Sawmill and 17 from Greenfire and 3 from Feels Right Farm. Hope to get the 4 more pullets from Feels Right Farm. Coops are my problem. There is no DH to build them.... but I am working on that with some friends.... not the DH part.....the coops.

No I live in Callahan near Jacksonville. Where are you near? Sawmill was the nearest place I found with purebreds. I was looking for a few months, thought several times that I found someone selling them, and once I'd drive all the way out to there place they had EE's. Which I am by no means opposed to. But I am not going to buy them from someone straight up lying to me. I also decided that I def want OE's, so I intend to have my own OE's and EE's. I went to Sawmills not even knowing he had Marans. I called asked about Ams and he said I have a few. I begged him to hold them til I got there, lol. And nice as he is he did so. Marans were on my list so as we were picking my chicks and he meant he only had a few I asked him if I could just get all the Marans also. So that's where I am at, they are a little over 2 weeks. How old are your roos you need to rehome? How soon could you tell the maran roos? I am really hoping one of the marans will be a cockerel. And where did you get your cream legbars? They are hard to find here. Do you breed and sell any or are they just your pets?

Hello from England! I have one Wheaten Marans currently and I really like her, she is 30 weeks old and hasn't laid yet.

Any feed back on her would be appreciated, I don't intend on showing her but if she's really nice I might find her a roo. The photo was taken a couple of days ago but it's quite blurry and dark because I had to zoom, and the weather is horrible here at the moment.

In my limited knowledge - I like her type, her legs are the right colour, this photo makes her look darker than she really is but she is still fairly dark for a Wheaten, I love her width and tail width, her eyes are the right colour but her comb has a couple too many points.
