Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I joined the marans club in Facebook but am having trouble understanding because all the abbreviations such as bcm, click bcm. Can someone help me with the most common ones. Am so forth.
Thank you

Which Marans facebook did you join ???
There are several now. I suggest Marans Fanciers, and Marans Chicken Club USA
there is also Marans Central and Marans Mania,,, and a few others, you may have to be a member of a specific club to join.

Simply ask someone to clarify what the abbreviations refer to,,,, all chicken groups are guilty of using them, assuming everyone knows what is being talked about.
The most commonly used ones are probably BCM and FBCM;

BCM - Black Copper Marans
FBCM -French Black Copper Marans

you may also see others;
FGCM - French Golden Cuckoo Marans
BTB - Black Tailed Buff Marans

BBS -Black,Blue,Splash

hope this helps, remember there are also other varieties; Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, Golden Salmon, Silver Salmon, White, Crele, they are not usually abbreviated

I neglected to mention the Birchens and Blue Birchens

there are likely others I missed as well

Thank you Ray. That's exactly what I was coming across. They also have f1 and other things to explain how to get olive Eggers, thanks o/o in capital or lower case. I tried to look it up but don't know where I can learn this.

F1 is the first generation of a specific breeding. o refers to the recessive white eggshell color O is the dominate blue eggshell color.

Congrats!

My new BCM roo joined the flock today. He got his poor butt kicked by my ameraucana roo :/ I'm sure he'll know his place in the flock though within a couple days. The fighting seemed to be over by bed time and he had no problem getting a spot on the roost but his comb is now all blue koted. I thought he'd take over leadership due to his size but I guess not.
i put a 9mth old plymouth roo in with a few others 2 blue orpingtons and a 7mth old araucana who was half his size. The ara flogged him and he wouldn't go near him. Aras (and im assuming ameraucanas) pack a good punch and call a good bluff for their size

I think this male is a crossbred bird,,, NOT a Marans,,, his comb seems incorrect....hence, the incorrect coloring.
ALL varieties of Marans bred to the APA standard ( American) should have feathered legs / outer toe.

Again,,, ALL varieties of Marans bred to the APA standard should have feathered legs and outer toe,,,, even Cuckoo.
Cuckoo lines that are clean legged are most likely from British lines,,, no reason we shouldn't be trying to put feathers on them to meet the proposed American standards.

Please explain why you and Cackle hatchery would adhere to the UK standard when selling in the US, especially when the American standard calls for feathered shanks  ???
Was the reference to the  " UK standard "  made in error ?
I am assuming your Bev and Greenfire stock would have feathered shanks,  like the American and French standard calls for.
Eye color should change to orange / bay with maturity.

What sort of deformed feet are you seeing ???   Curled Toes ?   Webbed toes ?   Shorter outer toe ?

Rudimentary toe is somewhat common in Marans, not a major fault, but something to breed away from when possible.
Feather-footed breeds are known to carry this trait, it is genetic,, the outer toe can be smaller in size and sometimes have no toenail.   It is NOT considered a major fault or DQ in show poultry.   Not desirable, but not horrible either.

Yes Ray,
It seems like some are missing toes completely but might have nails growing out the side. Most but not all are deformed on the outside toe... short.. shirt with no nail.. missing totally. ..
Even the Silkie I bought from them has an extra toe growing out the back.

Hello forum,
With my past small experience, I haven't lost a chicken due to sickness after week 5, only preditors. I lost a lot to that.
Well today, I noticed a splash maran wasn't as active as the others. I picked her up and she seemed sick... tail and wings drooping.
I got her to drink some water from a syringe. Just a little on the tong and separated her. Well, she got more and more lathargic. Finally jersey and died.
Any ideas what might be wrong. Does anyone know if Arkansas has a place to see what killed her. She was probably the best looking one...
