Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just a couple of comments about this thread being the one where no one gets along. What I would like to know is what is wrong with people disagreeing with stated comments. If you only have one persons viem on things you or myself will ever learn anything. I know some will chime in with snide remarks to make someone else look less than intelligent, but this is just the way it is on the forums.

At least on this forum you do not have some one rejecting your post because it is a differing opinion. You can not tell from a post the tone of voice it was written. Just like any forum some will get away with saying just about anything they would like, where some one else will be chastize. So fire away with the snide remarks as I will not comment on any of them going forward.

I agree, Don. I, for one, appreciate the fact that most of the time, we can share differing opinions, give constructive critiques, and bring up questions that may not otherwise be asked elsewhere. Sometimes the "passion" gets a little intense, but that goes for anything else in life where people believe in what they think and do. Viva la difference! We are ALL here to learn, and everyone can take away some lessons from everyone!

Don, I'm not sure if this is aimed toward me, and I will reply by saying that I work very hard to not post with my "moderator hat" on in this thread. However.....I love BYC for the whole of what it is, not just this thread, and I apologize to all if/when I get upset with peeps who feel like they need to be nasty/negative. My mom always said if I don't have something nice to say, don't say it...while I actually do NOT agree with that old saying, I DO feel like you can make your point without being mean.

I applaud your breeding work, Don, and HONESTY always look forward to your posts. You bring a lot to this thread, and I think we all appreciate your feedback.

I think whoever stated that when we get riled up, it's because we love this breed and whenever you are passionate about something, emotions run high. That's all okay - just be nice! It's really not that difficult!!

WELCOME to all the new folks - I hate that this thread now has the reputation of not being nice, but I guess it is what it is. So long as we are still learning, moving forward the breed...that's what we're here for!

So many points to discuss, where does a person start?

I just wanted to say that I too get alot of PM's and private emails from new folks that are intimidated by this thread and it's size as Math stated previously..........To the new folks out there reading this.....I promise to help make this a happy place for all, please don't hesitate to jump in here with questions or whatever it is you want to know. It does not matter if questions that have been asked before are being asked again and answered again. I for one, learn more from repetition and visual aid than anything else. So go ahead please JUMP RIGHT IN!!!!!

Why I breed Marans...not that it matters really just thought that I would share.

I breed these birds because I am totally in love with them and because of that EGG! That egg is what it is all about to me, because if they didn't lay an egg like they do/can, then why are we here discussing them?
At first all I wanted was the egg and didn't care about how the birds looked..........until I decided that I needed more blues and wanted to know how to make them. I found the original thread and jumped in, after I started researching and learning about genetics and colors and how to make them (blues).....I was hooked on not only the egg color but then the body and feathers of the bird. I hope to only do this breed justice one day and conserve them for all that makes them special.

....if we culled every bird for a fault what would we would have to breed?

Wynette, Not aimed at you in any way, if it was I would of let you know, as you know I am not bashful.

Will say this, if everyone agreed with everything that is posted no one would learn anything. Believe me there are different ways to do things when related to chickens. Sometimes some of the simpliest things are not known by everyone, including myself, contrary to popular belief.

True, Don.

Let's chat about the length of this thread - there have now been two folks indicating they've received e-mails or PMs from folks worried about joining in now that it's gotten so long. What are your opinions - should be close this, call it "Marans thread #2" with dates in the subject or something, and open a new one?
