Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

If that is truely the trio they are selling as BCMs then I wouldn't buy them for any breeding program at all. No feathered shanks, can't see any copper on either hens and that roo sure looks like a poorly marked silver birchen. Now, they may very well be great chickens for a mixed flock since they are wrong about what they are I wouldn't trust the background of the birds.
But if it really is a mistake on the photo being posted and they do in fact have BCMs then WOW that's a killer price!

Hi greencastle!!!! How have you been, good to see ya!

Are you looking to breed one color variety or are you looking to breed more than one color of Marans.

With the Black Copper, Blue Copper and Splash Copper a person can run all three colors together in the same pen and get pure Black Copper, Blue Copper and Splash Copper birds from those matings. This is the same with solid Blue, Black and Splash Marans.

A fun variety maybe could be the Cuckoo Marans and run some solid Blue Marans in with them and make your own Blue Cuckoos. Oh and these would be sexlinked. Fun!

Wheatens breed true and can be sexed very early on. Wheatens are very beautiful birds.

Debbi~

FANTASTIC! The babies will be lovin' it in no time, running and playing and bumping bellies, they are so funny when they get moved out of the brooder and into their new digs. Seems like they are little scaredy cats the first couple of days...then they realize they have alllllllll this space. One of my favorite times to watch them is at this mini-big chicken stage.

Hi

A recessive white gene produces a bird that is all white. A dominant white gene produces a bird that can have color leaking through. There isn't a sheen on a white bird.

I use a good old fashioned pink-polka dotted spiral notebook and a old photo album. Too much headache for me to use the 'puter except for printing out photos for the album.

I believe you are talking about the two males that I said one had brown breast and the other had white in wing and tail. Would you like to elaborate on your reply.

Don, Could you be a little more specifc? What kind of info are you looking for on the Cuckoo's?

I just thought someone might have some info. on breeding the Cuckoo, I have in the past had cuckoo in other breeds. Maybe someone has some pictures of their cuckoo.

Hi PINK,

I awoke this morning to thunder. It was early, so went back to sleep. Storm over, went outside to open the pop door. They all came running out and started doing what chickens do. Food & water were good, so went back inside for my coffee. Looked out the kitchen window a little later, and noticed them running around in a panic. What the heck?? Was about to grab the shotgun, thinking their was something eyeballing my chooks. Then it dawned on me...it had started to rain!

They'd never felt rain before, and all I could think of was Chicken Little; "the sky is falling, the sky is falling!!" They finally figured out it didn't rain under the nest box and went there for a bit. Then, my brave gal Beaut, led the flock into the coop, flapping and squaking all the way. Silly chicks
