Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes the leg color when hatched looks yellow from the chick absorbing the yolk and will turn white though some Black Coppers have another strain of something in them and have yellow legs at maturity which is a DQ and should be culled. Let it feather out and see maybe you could pen the hens with one roo and do some more hatching to find where it is coming from....

Cheryls photo shows the normal color of Wheaten chicks legs, they do change as they mature like Medicine Man stated to a pinkish/white. Mind you I do not work with Wheatens except in a round about way through my friend. Every Wheaten chick I have ever hatched out for her has had legs exactly like Cheryl's babies.

I know I think, at least based on lack of wing/tail development I have 2 roos and wings are darker, I have 8 more viable going into lockdown on saturday, hoping for at least 7 girls!

You gotta love wheatens (those in the pic aren't doing it yet, they are still cuties).--They go through the homeliest look when they first start getting thier real feathers in. I've never seen such unattractive cuteness LOL. They are downright ratty. They are sure purty as adults though.

....I was just looking through my old wheaten baby pics and saw them as juvies LOL!

I can't wait...it's funny I love them when they are little, but I'm particularly fond of the period when they really starting to come into full feathering. I get impatient waiting for them to become the gorgeous birds

silly huh?
