Cool idea for a brooder but that would never work in our house....chicks need to be locked up like Ft. Knox so they don't become dog toys!!

We have a cat - - - so the cat has to get locked up if we leave the house or at night so that the chicks don't become cat toys

I got to giggle reading your post. Your life seems like a younger version of mine. I oh so remember the days when I was chasing animals all around this place.................LOL. Now my grown kids & grand kids do the chasing..LOL

Lol I wish someone else would chase them instead of myself. My sons and dh will help me sometimes so I shouldn't complain.

I didnt get any pics today because it is pouring rain off and on all day and everything and all the chickens are a muddy mess. The muscovies are loving it though. Today the roos in one of the bachelor pens decided to be buttheads and beat up two of the boys. First they all ganged up on my favorite Wheaten Marans boy and he finally hid under the coop. Then since they couldn't get him anymore they all ganged up on a Black Copper roo and I found him a muddy bloody mess and had to take him and put him in a separate pen. I don't know what has gotten into these roos today. These are the ones that never fight! Do you think it is the rain?

Has Anyone noticed if thier marans roos fight more when its raining?

I hear you on that! Our dogs are crated at night and when we can't supervise.

Just took a couple pics of my bcm roo. He is growing every day and honestly, becoming one of my favorite roos. Hopefully he stays sweet.

If they get wet from the rain they will fight because they don't recognize each other.

Are you serious? Wow and here I thought they were smart

That is and isn't funny, talk about yer bad hair day. "Hey, do I know you? You look so different with your feathers wet!"

Come to think of it last time it rained some of the roos in the other pen were fighting too...

PINK, if you're here help me with this. I bought 3 blue copper maran hens and 1 roo.2 of the hens have laid 4 or 5 eggs each, the problem is the eggs are nowhere near as dark as my Welsummers eggs. They are getting a little darker but not much. Should I get rid of them now or hold out to see what happens? I kinda think they were someone's culls because the roo and 1 of the hens has black eyes, 1 of the other hens is clean legged. At the time I bought them I didn't realize black eyes was a fault.what to do?

Well lets see... no fire yet... but flood and power outage and turner failure.. Sheesh... I have lost one of 15 hatched and two died coming out of their shell when the power went out (zipped and pushing)... bator dropped to 81 before I could get auxilliary running... 13 black copper survived so far.. they are weak and one Wheaton... yep you heard me.. Willhe threw a wheaton. (expected it)

Well pitchforks haven't fallen from the sky yet and I guess the day is over... I am happy to have my 14 little fellers... I doubt the rest of the pips are going to hatch... I had a solid 17 and 8 more pips... All are lost I think... I will let her run for another 48... Had to pull babies as it was a case of life and death...

Cross your fingers that the rest of the little fellas do okay.. It was a little rough going.... taking them to the car to warm up etc...

I guess that puts me out of the running for most chicks hatched on Mahroni's thread... (not like I was running a sportsman)

Update..only 13 survivors from Hatch Day Hell....

geebs, sorry to hear of your mis-fortunes. On the bright side.....you have 13 more little chickies than I do! If it's any consolation (and it probably isn't) I lost all my baby Royal Palm turkeys to a raccoon last year, so I can sympathize with your feelings of loss and frustration.
