Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Geebs-Holy cow! What a day you've had. I'm glad you were able to get some to survive, but I'm sure it was heartbreaking to loose the others.

I'm still trying to get my hens to use their new pop up door.

Gee whiz. What a bunch of chickens. Every time I open the door they scatter like I've just shot a shotgun at them. I thought I did a pretty good job of building the thing, but I don't think the girls don't appreciate my efforts and engenuity.

I think tomorrow they are going to get out that door one way or another. I may just have to show them who's the boss.

I don't have to work tomorrow, so a trip to the feed store is on the agenda as well as a few minor tweaks to the pens.

The roos have finally learned to get in the hut at night.

I may have to let the ladies know that the guys are smarter than they are.

Yesterday was my hatch day... when I left for work I had 2 CMs (hatchery stock) and 2 CMxSLW out with 9 pips plus 7 still waiting on... so far nothing showing from the three BCM eggs set though. I couldn't see into them to candle so who knows...
COME ON HATCHIN' VIBES

Last hatch for the winter for me, but come next spring watch out! That bator will run from April-June

I am brand new to this forum, am wanting to start a flock of Marans, and have a question or two if y'all don't mind. Does anyone on here sell Blue Birchin or Wheaten Marans eggs for hatching? I really don't need 25 birds so am reluctant to purchase from a hatchery. Also, how soon after being layed do eggs need to be placed into an incubater? Your answers to my questions are much anticipated and appreciated. Thank you in advance, and have a great day.

Mark

The simple answer - - - the sooner the better. Time and PROPER handling are issues. The eggs should be gently turned several times a day while they are being stored for the incubator. EXTREME temps should be avoided too. Back to the time issue . . . . eggs should be set within the 2 weeks of laying, BUT SOONER is BETTER. I try to set mine at the 1 week mark.

I can not help you with blue birchin or wheaten marans

Hope you see some more hatch over the next couple of days. . . and at least you didn't walk away empty handed.

Congratulations on the 13 and we will need pics as soon as the babies are strong enough for their photo debut

First of all how old are they?
Are these their first eggs?
Are the eyes truly black or are they just a very dark shade of brown?
Don't let the clean shanks detour you if she is a nice bird and lays a nice egg....you can breed the feathers back in to the offspring.

So we need photos of the birds and photos of the eggs.......if you can put a Wellie egg or two next to the Marans eggs for comparison that would be great, please and thank you.

Now get to collecting more sister..........Let's give it another go, I need a hatch buddy! I locked down 7 eggs and almost have 5 little chickies.
I pipped the last Olive egg that is still alive just about 20 minutes ago just so I could see what is going on with it.....it's not quit ready so I wrapped it in a moist warm papertowel and put it back in the 'bator..........geesh, I hope this little baby doesn't wait much longer, I so really need to unplug and move the 'bator it's in so that I can hook up the new one. *if there was a very impatient smilie I would insert it here

You got any BLRW eggies hanging around that need to be hatched??????

Ok, so I couldn't stand it and had to look at it again and all it needed was a little more help. After breaking the membrane I noticed that this little baby would have pipped more toward the wrong end of the egg and I don't think this little fattie would have been able to turn, there was literally no room in the egg around it. We are now resting in the hatcher and chirping our little head off. Another little splash olive egger and this one has a peacomb too.

I know they are olive eggers but really they are 3/4 Marans so I hope I don't get stink eye for posting them here in the Marans thread.

Mark! & Welcome to the Marans thread!

Just a thought, but you might try asking in the Wheaten Marans discussion thread as well. Nivtup has nice Wheatens as does: Illia & Berkeleysprings but I'm not sure if any of them are selling eggs right now due to the winter season. You can also try the Wanted section threads here on BYC. Check out the Marans Chicken Club of the USA breeders list and also the Marans of America Club breeders list, lots of folks to find on those 2 forums for Wheatens.

As for Blue Birchens...well they can be pretty hard to get a hold of but there are a few folks out there that have them, I just can't think of any off the top of my head, sorry.

I see that you are a Wellie lover as well, be sure to come on over and check out the Welsummer Thread too........would love to have you join us there too!
