Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Isn't white fluff to be avoided? How hard is it to weed out that squirrel tail? Seems like lots of Marans have those....I'd go with the bigger one looks like he didn't get the white fluff....

I would find hatching eggs you'll get better stock for the most part and pre-order so you can get them to hatch in March or April. You could be lucky and find somebody close so you could pick them up even chicks....

I actually like a more golden hackle color on the wheatens - more like Bachelor # 1. Really, though, I'd need a better picture of bachelor # 2 before deciding.

Remember on size - bigger isn't ALWAYS better. Deviation too far from the standard in either direction is a flaw. How much does each fellow weigh?

The eggs in my avatar are from cuckoos. I got them from a private breeder, but I think the girls are really more of a hatchery quality. Right now they are in the laying flock. One is a pretty good broody (she'd like some eggs now, actually).

My black copper Marans definitely lay a darker egg than these cuckoos do. I like them nonetheless, though!

I think the "meaties" are gross..I raised a half dozen this spring and I think that they are such a unnatural thing.....bald, dirty and VERY smelly. YUCK, not for me.

I'll stick with my pretty Hens.
