Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It sure has to be cuter than the tarantula crossings when they migrate! A long, wide black line, as far as the eye could see from left to right, and crossing the highway. I was driving back from a day trip to Mexico, and got into Las Cruces, NM and saw this from a distance. I asked the guy I was with, "what is that line?" He told me don't stop, just keep on driving! Of course being young and stupid, I didn't listen, and stopped in the middle of it!

Poor Fred was like, "DRIVE, DRIVE, DRIIIVVVVEEEE!!!!" Shut the air vents and windows too, as they were climbing all over the hood of the Blazer! I will never forget that as long as I live!
Seriously, things nightmares are made of. I would run as many of those suckers over as possible. Barf

Great, there goes my good night sleep tonight......OMG nightmares.

OK I think I'm ready for my marans review. LOL I have just started into the breed and know I have a long way to go so please feel free to prioritize what I need to work on first.

Reading today I realize their leg color is way off....oops.

Please forgive my photography....I have NO idea how y'all get such good pictures. My hens are fairly docile but after a VERY rough few months as a teenager my rooster gives me a WIDE berth. :) (Please ignore my 2 black AM in the pen)

I have about 9 more splash marans in the brooder that are growing out and their leg feathering is a lot heavier than what I have now.

The rooster is right at a year old and the splash pullets are POL.

This is my BCM that doesn't have copper and has the wrong colored ear lobes....ugh. Don't worry, her eggs are used for misc layer chicks and she is the broody queen so she gets to stick around. Her leg feathers are the best out of all of them though....lol

I promise not to cry or argue from the critique of these birds. I might ask questions for further clarification but I'm good with brutal honesty.

Egg color from my these splash pullets:

Gil, wasn't it you that promoted that PBS turkey video about a year ago. I totally had to get that one too!! Now I'm going to have to travel to NZ to see the penguins crossing. Sheesh.

yup, wasn't that turkey program awesome?! I loved the whole thing, so amazing to see someone giving others an inside look into their lives. I recommend New Zealand to everyone as well, but for so much more than just the penguin crossings. The Maori culture is so amazing and humbling, the people, the landscapes, just everything. I feel like so much of me is still there, just never felt as at home anywhere in my life. I would love to live there, but would be a feat and a half I'd think to get my Marans down there, but not leaving without them! haha

Oh, and I also recommend living with a family there, many people let out rooms or whole portions of homes to guests. Also, leave the bigger cities like Auckland and Wellington, go to both the south and north islands and take the ferry from Wellington to Picton...
Amazing, jaw dropping beauty there that I still think of pretty much everyday. This now ends my shameless plug for my home away from home. Aoetearoa - Land of the long white cloud

I'm ashamed to admit, I bawled more than once watching that turkey show. And I keep watching it! Clearly, I get WAY too connected to the birds ....

haha you aren't alone, I don't cry a ton, but animals will get me every stinking time! I love the personal connection he was able to portray within the confines of less than an hour

Always wanted to go to Australia and NZ. I have a couple that will put me up in their home in Brisbane, if and when I ever get the money to go! They are dog, duck, and lantern lovers, and quite the comedians. Now vicki, you know if you take your Marans down there, you are going to have to shave their legs, right??
