Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Debbi, I am listening and have to say I agree 100% with you here.
I've seen this happen in the dog world. Too much influence coming from top winners, yet the dogs in no way matched the SOP or their original function! Very frustrating to say the least, and does nothing to improve the breed as a whole. JMO

I have to interject: at what point do we get back to focusing on type and get off all this colour nonsense? It seems to me we still have such a long way to go with type, at least that's what I'm seeing at the shows. Seems to me this thread focuses WAY too much on the minor details like colour and combs and shank feathering and not nearly enough on the stuff that is really important like building the bird first.

(Ok, Enough sour grapes from me. Crawling back under my rock and focusing on my Silkies that are hatching this weekend .... )

Ok you two, explain to me why the Birchen legs should be darker than the BCM legs. I would think the gold/red gene would want to produce a darker leg than a silver based gened bird would? Am I confused again, or is it just something I missed here?

On an off topic and good note, it was 70* here today on Dec. 1st!!!! Same for the next couple of days!

I'm sure we'll pay for this one way or the other, but another mild winter, with a good snow or two in between, would be ideal for me!! Right now, it is 60* outside!!!

Barb, Where would you suggest finding the Marans with the proper type and breed shape ? We mainly have to talk about what we can improve. If you go out and buy some narrow body and unthrifty Marans you will have the same 20 years from now. What folks should be saying is buy the Barn and then paint it any color you would like.

Remember I am all ears if you have a formula that does not involve Mendel would sure like to hear what you or anyone else has to say. What you are seeing at the shows is what has been there for at least three years.

Barb, May be just me, but if you are showing, type should be a given! If you are breeding, type should be a given! Without size and type, the rest is moot. But if you have the basic type, then the rest does come into play towards perfecting the variety! If you have funky combs, color, and shank feathering, you ARE dealing with TYPE!

Debbi, all breed of birchen call for black except the birchen cochin calls for yellow. who knows what it will end up being.
