Don, the older bcm roo I bought and the bcm hen (I did not buy her) that produced the young bcm cockeral I have also produced a white marans. He was at the show as well and looked really nice. The owner said Bev Davis told her that the white cockeral should breed true even though he was a sport from a bcm pair. What do you think, just curious.............

Okay totally lost here on the sport thing.

So the baby is fom a diffrent color of Marans or diffrent breed all together. I was told it was from White Marans only.

Let me give this a whirl...... A sport is a chick that hatches a different colour than its parents. I believe it is from a hidden or mutated gene in the parent(s). It is still the same breed. My example was a white chick hatched from BCM parents.

Don believes Vivi's white chick is possibly a sport (still a marans) because the leg colour is wrong from a breeding of true White Marans.

When does that start? LOL I have my first batch from my dead roo pipping, due to hatch tomorrow and I want to mark the possible keepers. So at hatch I am looking for some white on the face and belly, white toenails, and feathered legs. Anything else? Do you just not use the ones that don't have the white on the face? is that an automatic cull?

Well, I consider the process of moving and selecting birds for matings part of the getting ready, so I guess now. I've been so under the weather that I had to put in on hold, so need to do some catching up so the girls have time to clear. I'd like to start collecting eggs the end of Jan to hatch by mid to end of February. All depending on weather of course.
This is my philosophy on what I do and don't cull in chicks. I will cull the obvious as they are growing, but will keep some of different patterning, like darker and etc so that I can learn the ins and outs of what works and what doesn't within my own stock. It is just as telling to see what is good as what is bad. Continuing on in the line from season to season I can use what I've learned to make better choices about matings and etc.

I'd love to see photos of you pairing process,,, perhaps explain what you pair up for what improvements.
