Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks. That was pretty much my guess and I guess I needed to hear from someone else. I would have felt better about if it had been one of the Ameraucanas because I have plenty of them and they are still laying. The Marans have stopped laying and I was hoping to get my dark egg project off to a good start before they stopped. The good part of this is the other two have hatched and are doing okay.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Sorry to read about your chick. Sometimes they pip the vein and bleed out and nothing can be done about it and it is sad. I have also seen a chick pip a vein and bleed an amount that I thought for sure would have done it in, but to my surprise the chick makes it. I don't know why it happens, but when it does I tell myself that this chick just wasn't meant to be and try to reassure myself that it was something I didn't have control over.

Are you going to be hatching again anytime soon?

When these are finished a dozen of my SLW's are going in primarily to check for fertility. If it's good then I'll hatch what I have. If not, I'll probably wait because all my fertile lavender eggs have been spoken for until the 5th and I don't see a need to hatch any more splits. Wished I could get a fire lit under my Marans.

Thank you Zanna and a very Merry Merry to you too! Hope you have an AWESOME day!

I enjoy this thread and contributing back what I have learned from everyone here. I have learned the very little bit of what I know about Marans and chickens from this thread and BYC, this place is the greatest! I hope to learn more and more and more from all of you fine Marans and BYC folks!

:)

for the kind words.

Yay, got a 400 lumens flashlight for my birthday and already spent a bit of time adapting it to a candler. I'm excited to try it out on both the Marans eggs and Ameraucana eggs.

Merry Christmas to everyone and happy belated birthday to Vicki!
My Christmas hatch started last evening and a first happened to one of my three Marans eggs. When the thing pipped blood started running down the egg. I watched it for a couple of hours and when there was no movement I opened it. The chick was dead and there was a fair amount of blood on the inside. Haven't seen this in my limited experience and I gotta figure there was nothing I could have done, but does anyone have an idea what might have happened?
If you want to chance opening the bator and opening up the egg a little you can put cornstarch on the vein and hopefully stop the bleeding. I have saved a few that way.
One of my lavender silkie chicks had pipped the vein and I thought for sure that one was a goner due to the amt of blood, but since I wanted lav silkies bad- I did the naughty and opened the bator and peeled the shell a little to visualize the vein and put some cornstarch on it and it worked! I did another one since then and it turned out okay too. I don't know it it will always work but if it is bleeding really bad then its worth a try especially if they are gonna die anyways. It also works on the chicks with the really bloody, actively bleeding umbilicus- just dab a little on the umbilicus. Sometimes you have to do it a couple times to get active bleeding to stop.

P.S. Happy Bday Vickie!!

Thanks Lynette!

I miss chatting with you! Gonna be collecting eggs here soon to start setting them. Hoping the birds get the memo and keep up the laying!
