Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nope, I woke up this morning with the other ear starting to hurt. I made a trip to the walk in clinic and sure enough - on top of the sinus cold, I have a double ear infection..... Ugggh...

I turned the incubator on this afternoon. I can feel my electric bill going up already

I've been collecting eggs from the only two of my six Black Copper Marans that are laying, and so far I've been able to catch them in the act and mark the eggs without a trap nest....got about 14 eggs from these two. I hope they are fertile. Tomorrow I'll set them

Good luck! I've got Blue, Black and Splash marans eggs in the bator now about 8 days in. Also in the process of building another coop and run to move some 9 week old bcm's into.

Okay, this is my BCM rooster that I'd like some comments on. Hatched him May 29th 2012 from pure Bev Davis stock that I got from Greenfire Farms that I no longer own. He is my only BCM boy and what I will be using next year. I'm only gonna sell locally and just want an idea of his positives and negatives for me personally going forward. He has good feathering on his dark legs and some spotting on his chest. My pullets just started laying but they are all too dark and the egg color is not bad but hopes it darkens close to what they hatched from. Thanks and happy christmas eve everyone!!!

The blade of his comb has a piece missing from an altercation with my big jubilee boy Atticus but is straight and has no sprigs. This guy is now in a small dog house coop until spring with no high roosting bar so I am concerned about his wing carry over the next few months, but his disposition is lovely and my husband seems to like him (a definite plus).

He looks pretty nice. His hackle color is a bit too light, it should ideally be uniform in color and same color as his saddle. His eye is also a bit too dark from what I can see in the photos, you want it a bay color not brown. His comb looks good. I don't see the spotting on the breast that you say he has. You want to stay away from breast spotting. Also watch those higher tail feathers. At 7 months of age, he can still change and you don't want a high tail. This is just what I see, I am still learning to evaluate.
