Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yeah I'm kinda bummed about the blue copper roo who was in there, he was really nice. I am just so shocked that something would chew right through the center of 1/2 inch plywood! Its not even like he started chewing at one corner, he just went straight down!
We are gonna bait the trap with what's left of the rooster. One is gone completely, one is mostly just be-headed (which makes me think its a raccoon). We are going to leave the coop locked up with the top still ripped off and stick the roo in a trap and place it into the brooder.

This is the first real raccoon attack we've had in a long time but we have had a few earlier this year: One night I had a broody key west hen that hid out in the bushes and I didn't know where she was. Then around 3 am I woke up to a bunch of ruckus going on and went out to the porch and here comes that broody hen running right up on the porch and up the steps and following right behind her was the biggest raccoon I have ever see! He was totally focused on her and didn't even seem to notice me till I screamed lol. Then he ran off into the night. I bet it was him!!
-Then,something attacked 2 roosters earlier this spring and killed one and bit the other in the head (He was a mean solid blue roo -he survived) these two roos had stayed out in the run and wouldn't go in their coop that night and they must of been close to the outside of the wire cuz it pulled the one's head through the fence wire that it killed . We are surrounded by woods here so lots of predators.

I have mostly been dealing with foxes all summer long..they are hard to get. I have a game cam and got several pics of foxes trying to dig under brooder pens etc. One got into a pen and took 5 hens grrr. He would even come out in the daytime. All our neighbors have chickens too now (even the ones that hated ours -now have them too lol) anyhow I think someone shot that fox because he is gone. I haven't got him on the game cam in a long time and no digging under runs lately.

I'm wondering could it be a badger? I've seen them tear up things like that. VIVI

good luck in getting rid of the trouble, friends of ours had a mink go through last winter and wipe out a good number of their birds, I think they ended up getting rid of it

No good Lynette! I hope that you are able to keep all your other birds safe!
I'm thinking I am going to have to put tin roofing on all of the brooders and coops. I have plywood with roll roofing on the tops of all the big coops and breeder coops. Now I am wondering if I should put tin on top of that. Dang if they could chew through roll roofing (or shingles) as well as they could chew through plywood, so I'm kinda freaked out about the whole thing now LOL! I didn't have any roll roofing on this particular baby brooder coop but I don't think it would have mattered if it really wanted in there.

I have some rabbit hutches back there too and something chewed through the flooring that was hardware cloth in a few places last month. My coops are all wood and hardware cloth. I thought that would be enough......

I wonder if it would chew straight through plywood walls? This critter has got to go!

I've had some friends that had a big ol' raccoon that dug through plywood much like yours. It ended up being a momma getting food for young ones. I've seen hardware cloth ripped up from predators as well. Any place I use hardware cloth, is not accessible to predators because of that. In place I use welded wire, which I've never had a problem with anything getting to the birds here in 30 some years. I would say that the tin would indeed be a good idea.

This critter could have been getting food for youngsters. It took the smaller rooster with him. I doubt that the smaller roo got away because it had to have still been dark when it happened..I can hope but I really think he got taken. grrrr.. The raccoon that I did see here earlier this year, trying to get that hen was BOLD he almost ran right past me trying to get that poor hen. Maybe I should put some extra tin around the bottom parts of the coops too. This is gonna be expensive with all this tin I will have to buy lol :/ I have never had any damage this bad before.

We've had more problems this year than any others because of the dryness, and consequently the lack of prey. We've had all sorts of things coming up close that have never been a problem. I usually watch craigslist and can pick up materials I am needing in the farm and garden section or the materials section for a good deal.

I got all the wood for my breeding coops (24 ft long) form a house that was demolished for free from Craigslist. I agree its a good way to get stuff. I will be watching it. I think the one coop we have that is built completely from pallet wood is the most sturdy. For some reason that pallet slat wood is really hard. Probably cuz they heat treat it. It is hard to pull off the pallets and hard to nail through. I might build any more new coops from that type of wood. I stained the one we build with a reddish brown stain and it looks really nice- like a rustic cabin lol.

yeah. I let them set a day to get to room temp. waited 3 days to put the turner on. My issue is I have spent 300.00 on shipped penedesenca eggs. None have hatched. I put my eggs in there in betwen and getting 85-90% to hatch...

Eggs are dark but not as dark as some of the marans.

For that kind of money, I wouldn't risk shipped eggs. For that kind of money have them hatch the eggs and ship you the chicks OR make arrangements to meet them at a show to pick up the eggs / chicks.
