Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks Vivi! I am estatic! I only have 3 Birchen pullets and then I thought I was down to 2. Phewwww! I just hope that she will be okay and that she didn't get to cold....it's been down into the low 20's over the last week and the last couple of days have been down to 28 and 30. She couldn't get to any food or water so that worries me.
the one benefit you have is that she was able to use her own body heat to warm the container she was in. That will make a significant difference and should be able to tell in the next 4 or 5 days if she will make a full recovery with no lingering affects.

I HOPE to finally get a garden this year. I really want a chicken garden too. I will need some guidance with exactly what that is

I just kinda wing it on the garden. I have planned them, but my time is too limited these days so I will just plant the usual. I need to clean the garden spot from 2 years ago.... still have the tomato stakes up

for me here, the chicken or animal garden includes things they will love for treats or things that are medicinally good for them, such as comfrey. I also grow lots and lots of greens like collards, kale, lettuces. Of course they get all the goodies from the main garden too, like the tops of veggies, imperfect tomatoes and etc. I'm always looking to add to their little plot tho

Yes, I will be selling my veggies again this year since it looks like we will still be here for this year.
I will send you photos of the moveable hoop house when it is done. Believe me it will be simple....I live for simple. :D

I was thinking more a GREEN's Garden for them. I will have the usuals in the main garden and I am sure there will be more than enough Squash, zucchinni and cucumbers to feed them all... if I can keep the deer out. My neighbor might take care of that since he is hunting this year.

Share here please?!?!? When I get moved to the farm in a year or two I will have more time for gardening and would love to see what you come up with.

I'm fortunate to have a fence around the garden, the only turds I have to watch out for are the chickens

She survived that, she is a tuff bird.

I am still feeding Kale, Swiss Chard, Beets and Red Cabbage out of last years garden (to the chickens and ourselves). Last week we had 3 nights in a row of 24 deg. weather and not much warmer in the day. I went out to the garden and the Kale leaves were frozen solid. Went out yesterday and it looked perfect! Very hardy stuff and the chickens love it, especially when they are locked up in the breeder pens! My Welsummers even eat the huge Swiss Chard bulbs, the BCM will only eat the leaves, little Princes and Princesses :)

Thank you very much! Eases my mind and is exactly what my DH said. Trust me, I will be keeping a very close eye on her.
