Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just a little info for the folks that like to feed their fowl a little Meat Scraps, fish meal and liquid vitamin and you buy your feed already bagged. Take the amount of the ingredients you would like in a plasti bucket and use a spray bottle to spray warm water to dampen the mix. start with a little water and start mixing and ad water as needed until you can take your hands and make a Bantam egg size ball, this I use on the single cage birds all year long

Thanks for sharing this Don. Question? You've spoke of using raw meat in the past....are you talking of that now? Also, what kind of meats do you use?
I've never fed mine meat, don't know why, just haven't.

Kim, What I am talking about here is the Dried meat products they put in processed poultry feed. Purina does not use animal by-products.

Yes I do use the xtra lean to my fowl that I am conditioning in cages.

When I have several birds I have my own feed ground and all of this is added in the mix. At present I am using a small gamebird pellet make by Buckeye feed close by in Ohio.

Some day I might post some of the experiments I have done with Poultry trying to find things that would work for me. Some worked and some didn't.

Haha! I was lurking on the thread because I wanted to see what everyone else was talking about, marans-wise. XD

I am interested in the breed for its beautiful eggs. I used to show chickens on a very amature county fair level and enjoyed it greatly. I have just discovered this breed through a long distance friend and have some questions. 1) do they all lay the dark eggs, or do they have to be f5,f6,generation etc..to get the darkest eggs? Are they like the olive eggers? related to them? how do I get either breed with the greatest guaranty of richly colored eggs? I am a newbie.... be gentle! LOL

Welcome to the thread, lots of great people here sharing information. As to the dark egg color, not all of them lay dark colored eggs- to be considered a Marans a pullet/hen must lay at least a number 4 on the egg chart (sold through the Marans club) at some point in it's laying cycle. Recommendation is to only set eggs from the darkest laying ones to hatch out chicks that will potentially lay dark eggs. Also recommended is to use roosters that were hatched from dark eggs to help pass on the dark egg gene.

They are separate from olive eggers- which are created from a blue egg layer and a dark egg layer- that's about the extent of my knowledge on these

if you read through some (or all ) of the pages you will see what different ones have and ask lots of questions!

Hi every one, just ignore my first post it doesn't matter.

Here are my FWM 12 week pullets.

Sorry your first post was overlooked......... I don't raise WM, I raise BCM so I was hesitant to comment but your Wheaten Roo does not look like a Wheaten Marans Roo, the colouring is not correct. I googled pics of them and not sure what to think of your boy. Maybe someone else will chime in. There is a Wheaten Marans Thread, not sure of the link but you might post and ask for opinions over there. This thread moves fast and has a lot of chat, just repost again and usually someone will comment. I am mostly a lurker..................
