Hello PEEPS!! Just hatched out some new babies, not from my birds. They are BCMarans, and the feet n legs are looking a bit YELLOW to me, not to mentioned the white tipped wings and yellow?? fluff? What do you all think?

Just got in from shutting up the animals for the night and collecting eggs. Plum filled up the whole egg basket tonight! The girls know its time to start hatching soon. Here's one of the eggs, this is under a spot light and with the flash on the camera. The egg is a deeper tone, but the flash washed it out a bit. Its not a shiny egg, it has a velvet quality to the tone, but was wondering what people thought of me trying to enter an egg show with some like these? Think they might do something?

Looks like the shape so many are looking for,,,, Don has discussed this recently,,,, I like the color alot and it seems even toned.

What are they looking for mostly in the egg shows,,,, what are the priority features ???

And, who does the judging on the eggs,,, is there a special "egg judge" ???

Judges are usually one of the judges already there for the show. Here when I had our show in November, I just contacted one of the judges we hired to see if they would be willing to judge the egg show as well. I sent paperwork and and egg chart on ahead of time that explained the criteria and etc from the Marans club so when he got here, he was ready to go.

On the score cards for the egg show the categories are Shell Color, Shape, Texture and Uniformity (as a group of three). Shell color can get up to 7 points, Shape up to 1, Texture up to 2 points and Uniformity up to 3 points, for a possible 13 points.

Under texture Matte = 0 points

Satin - 1 point (shell should feel smooth to the touch all over)

Bright - 2 points (bloom and appearance will only be present with freshness)

We had an egg and chicken show here in January. I didn't enter any chickens, but did enter one egg. It got a Champion trophy. How's that for funny.
I had never entered an egg or a chicken, so it was pretty funny. I asked the judge a lot of questions afterwards and here is some of what she said:
Eggs should have a good shape, balanced and even. not lumpy, pimpled, scratched, dimpled or cracked.
The color should be even too (even for spotted eggs, the spots should be even).
I entered a Marans egg that was mauve. The weirdest color I'd ever seen, but the judge seemed to like it.
This show had lots of different classes. You could enter a set of eggs to show how similar they are, how different they are, how good they look together, classes for the insides of eggs, and for the colors of eggs. Personally, I've never shown in anything so novel before. I stopped by the coop when the car motor was already running, and saw an egg, grabbed it, and went off to the show. No prep, no muss, no fuss. I was going to the show to look at chickens, and wound up with a trophy, a gift certificate, a ribbon, and a container of meal worms for the girls.

If you've got an egg show in your area, then enter! It's fun, easy, and cheap. Go play!

Do any of you know about the BC Marans bred byBrian Parks of Fraiser Creek Farm in Corvallis, Oregon? I'm new to Marans and was hoping to get some nice birds for laying, not necessarily for breeding.

I do not know this person, but I have been watching his ads on CL. The eggs and their color look nice and the couple of photos that have been posted for his Black Copper hens seem to be nice. They have beautiful copper hackles that is for sure. Last time I saw his ad he was asking $25 per pullet/hen, correct? $25 is reasonable IMO.

There are different types of eggs shows depending on the show one goes to. The Marans egg shows are a bit different than most where they only judge just Marans eggs and are done in entries of 3. The info I posted earlier are the criteria by which they judge these specific shows.
