Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

So I am incubating my first Goose eggs and was interested to read that the reason they are sprinkled with water each day is to help the membrane become more permeable so that they eggs lose moister faster. I wonder if this would work with Marans? I have lost 40% to drowning the last few hatches.... not really doing anything different, use dry hatching each time.

When you do your eggtopsy, how do you know the chick drowned?

excellent question, I don't know for sure. I assume that when I see a fully developed chick that has not broken into the air cell (which for these postmortems is usually very small) that it was drowned.

This is my first Marans it's kind of a moose, thinking roo but not positive, thoughts? Will be 8 weeks solid black right now comb and wattles haven't changed in 10-14 days (not darkening)Thank you

VICKI..... Very nice hen/pullet,,, great picture, really shows that beautiful sheen !
Thanks Ray! She's about a year and a half old now and is every bit as big as her mother. Now to see if I can get copper on these girls this year. I have three Black Copper Males that I'll be test mating each to and am particularly hopeful about the youngest of them being able to help with the coloring on these.

Question!!!!!!

Once you get copper in the hackles of the pullets is it hard to keep it? Or will it breed true more often than not???????
