Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

A little while ago I asked for instructions for sanding my eggs and got no response.  Trying one more time for advice.  Thanks.

There is a gal here on BYC (ChooksChicks...I think I have her handle right) that sands her Marans eggs. I know I have seen her post photos and how to's in the incubating and hatching threads. I think I also remember seeing something about it on her profile page.

Question!!!!!!

Once you get copper in the hackles of the pullets is it hard to keep it?  Or will it breed true more often than not???????

:caf   well going to take a shower but I will be back!

Donna~ I believe you will have good results with the color in the hackle and it breeding forward if you are sure to not cross good colored pullets back to a bird that is melanised....but this is coming from a gal that has basically lost all color on the pullets, so I would hope that someone else who knows best will come by and comment.

So I am incubating my first Goose eggs and was interested to read that the reason they are sprinkled with water each day is to help the membrane become more permeable so that they eggs lose moister faster.  I wonder if this would work with Marans?  I have lost 40% to drowning the last few hatches.... not really doing anything different, use dry hatching each time.

I have incubated my last 2 sets of Marans eggs with my goose eggs, I had a great hatch last hatch and am having an awesome hatch right now. They are popping like popcorn and no sticky shrink wrapped chicks.

I have taken the Marans eggs out everyday and cooled right along with the goose eggs for 15 minutes, they have also been misted just as the goose eggs and popped back into the bator.

I ran the last 2 hatches of Marans eggs at 60% humidity from day 1 to lockdown. Currently I am at 65% humidity in lockdown.

I will be trying one more set of Marans eggs along with another set of goose eggs and will do it identical to the last 2 runs, hope it gives me just as good of results.

I am pretty positive that you have a cockerel.

I have one black pullet with no copper , i also have 3 blues that are not showing any copper. I am wondering how I can get the copper back.. I have one BCM roo that has very light hackle feathers i was wondering if i should use him with the pullets..?

oops sorry i meant to quote the other comment you made about losing the copper...

thanks for letting me know! Very interesting.....

Any pointers on goose hatching?

I took 4 week photos of my chicks and it's becoming more clear what breeds they are (and in some cases gender). I got mixed breed chicks, but these two look pure Marans to my newbie eye. This is Lincoln (cockerel, right?) and unnamed hopefully pullet. She's starting to squawk, I'm hoping it's not a pathetic attempt to crow.

I also have a couple of Marans/Araucana crosses. They're rumpless with feathered legs. I'm having a hard time guessing gender on the black one, but I'm guessing the grey (blue?), named Sadie, is a pullet. The unnamed chick has a comb that's in between the sizes of the two above and no apparent wattles yet. Is the unnamed chicks color black copper? It sure is pretty.
