I recently got some black tailed buff Marans and some Penedesenca chicks. They are a few weeks old, about half feathered out. Unfortunately the breeder didn't band them and boxed them all together. This is my first experience with either breed and now I'm having trouble telling the two breeds apart.
Does anyone have pictures of black tailed buff Marans or Penedesenca chicks that are a month or two old that I can compare to my chicks?
I will try to get pictures of them posted for you all to see.
I'm not 100% sure but depending on what variety of Penedesenca's you got.....I believe the Black Tailed Buff Marans should look completely different, as in a different color, someone who raises them will have to confirm. Also, the Marans should have feathered shanks. Penedesencas do not have feathered shanks.
Most importantly..........you should see the lovely Carnation Comb or aka; The King's Comb on the male Penedesencas by about a month or more of age. I am unsure of how long it takes to see this comb on the female Penedesencas. If it is anything like how the not suppose to be in the Marans carnation combs works, it could take up to 5 months to see the carnation comb on the females. Also, just to make matters more complicated.......sometimes some Pene's don't show the carnation comb.
Hope this helps and others come by to give their advise too.
