Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I recently got some black tailed buff Marans and some Penedesenca chicks. They are a few weeks old, about half feathered out. Unfortunately the breeder didn't band them and boxed them all together. This is my first experience with either breed and now I'm having trouble telling the two breeds apart.

Does anyone have pictures of black tailed buff Marans or Penedesenca chicks that are a month or two old that I can compare to my chicks?
I will try to get pictures of them posted for you all to see.

I'm not 100% sure but depending on what variety of Penedesenca's you got.....I believe the Black Tailed Buff Marans should look completely different, as in a different color, someone who raises them will have to confirm. Also, the Marans should have feathered shanks. Penedesencas do not have feathered shanks.

Most importantly..........you should see the lovely Carnation Comb or aka; The King's Comb on the male Penedesencas by about a month or more of age. I am unsure of how long it takes to see this comb on the female Penedesencas. If it is anything like how the not suppose to be in the Marans carnation combs works, it could take up to 5 months to see the carnation comb on the females. Also, just to make matters more complicated.......sometimes some Pene's don't show the carnation comb.

Hope this helps and others come by to give their advise too.

I just finished going through 15 of my oldest Black Copper Marans pullets that I hatched this year: put numbered bands on them, took notes, and moved them out of the pen into a different pen and away from the cockerels. Not one mossy bird this year!

At least that makes me feel like I am making progress! I am getting more birds with the correct coloring, too. Now I hope some of these grow up to be BIG! The last show I entered one in, the judge did not like her size---too small, he said. I need to weigh that hen and see where she really is according to the standard. I know the judges now seem to want bigger and bigger birds. The male I used weighed 9.5 pounds as a cockerel.

i don't know why it is but I keep finding that the best looking ones are smaller than the not so good ones LOL!!!

Any guesses on the sex of my two 5 week old french black copper marans?? Chick 1... Chick 2...
these are definitly girls lol. Make shure to watch the copper if the color starts developing on their body you have roos. Also there combs arestill small. Which is a good sign. Maran roos start developing a larger red comb and waddles will apear early too
