Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Sigh, between the bad weather today I had a sighting very close to one of my pens of an eagle. I'm praying this weather will stop dumping on us so the ground will dry enough for me to do some more building. No way am I going to be added to the eagle buffet map.

Out of the first hatch I held back 18 chicks, and will hopefully have time to sort the second hatch out tomorrow. It's been so busy, there's not been a chance to do much more than feed, water, and change bedding so far.

Excuse the poor quality photos, taken with my phone and inbetween the severe weather we've had over the last 4 days. My oldest chicks are 7 weeks on Friday and the BCM pullets are starting to show nice copper! The pullets were also a little damp from running up from the barn in the rain when I brought them up to sort them, so are lookin a bit disheveled. I'll try for some better full shots of them when the weather has finally passed. They hate the thunder!

That is some really pretty red color coming in on its neck!

I took some pictures today of my 6 week old golden cuckoo Marans chicks. The lighting was off, so the pictures are not the best. Comments on how they are looking would be welcomed

I am just learning.

6 week olds~

8 week old GCM rooster. I will be keeping the one that turns out the nicest and will be re-homing the other one.

The chick in the second to last photo (and appeared in previous pics) has incredibly yellow legs which are a no no in the Marans. Its leading me to believe you might have some history of another breed crossed in coming out in her unfortunately.

Thank-you! These are the things I need to know. I went out to look at them and 2 out of the 6 pullets have yellow legs. I know the parent birds came from a well known breeder

As with all breeds, I suppose undesirable traits crop up from time to time. Those two pullets will make a couple of pretty egg layers for someone's layer flock.

Speaking of yellow........... I have a cockerel that has nice colored legs, but it seems that the bottoms of his feet are yellow. Is that acceptable or just as bad as if he had yellow legs?

I have a separate layer flock for reject girls that are just too pretty. Culls are a big part of anyone wanting to breed to standard and as long as you keep moving forward with your learning process it will help a ton!

How old is it? If its older that 4 weeks here and showing any signs of yellow, even on the pads, they have to go.

Thank-you for the pep talk
