Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Our broody hatched 5 BCM's and 2 Cuckoo marans. I'm thrilled to have gotten eggs from this particular breeder! My husband was thrilled that it didn't involve the energy-hog incubator or his garage!

My perfect rooster is surely in there somewhere......

Can you see the little behind trying to get under mama at the top of the picture? LOL

Hey ya'll,

I'm been raising Marans for almost 2 years now - starting to get better at it but I still have a long way to go. I have Blue Coppers / Black Coppers and French Blue Coppers - really nice looking birds. I am somewhat familiar with the color breeding chart but was wondering how the "copper" fits in to the breeding? I.E., do I just concentrate on "blue x black = 50 pct blue and 50 pct black" and the copper is silent?
thanks.

If I am correct you would get 50% blue copper and 50% black copper as it carries through- even if it isn't showing much.

thinking about getting a golden coo coo maran. Any comments on this breed?
You can get a mix of anything (temperment wise) with any breed.
My Cuckoo Marans are sweet birds, there is not a mean one in the flock.
They lay year round here, even in winter...and usually 2 out of 12 will go broody and are excellent moms.
But, that said, I cannot speak for someone elses' flock temperment.
Now with Golden Cuckoo is the same issue, from flock to flock you may encounter issues, so ask when you purchase, ask before you purchase.

I myself have never seen a mean Marans of any color.
If anyone has, please 'splain !
