Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have three Black Copper Maran roos and one lovely Blue Copper Maran pullet ... about 19 weeks. When should I expect her to start laying? Also, they are part of a mixed flock (10 birds) right now. If I separate a pair for breeding, can I reintroduce them back into the flock?

gorgeous birds! Esp. the pullet! I managed to hatch out 8 blues this spring, and 3 of them are pullets. Mine started laying between 5 and 6 months. And yes, if you separate a pair or 3 for breeding you can reintroduce them back to flock later. Remember to separate them at least 3 weeks before you start collecting eggs, to let the old sperm cycle out of the hen so eggs are "pure". I kept mine side by side with the rest of the flock able to see eachother and had no problems when re-integrating them.

I finally have dark eggs! Here are the 1st two eggs from my Marans pullets (Tuesday's on the left). Today's egg is a little darker!

2 of my pullets just started laying, one last week and one just today. They are 22weeks old.

Found this one today in the goats house

You have a good dark color on your new eggs - great job! I have 6 Marans pullets and they are at 22wks also. I have been on pins and needles waiting for them to start laying. Only the 1 has started so far but the other 5 are watching and hopefully learning!
