Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just wanted to add- we purchased this exact chart too.... See the hazy grayish cast on the tops of eggs 1, 2, and 3? (It is on other eggs on that chart as well, but these are the easiest to spot.)

This means this chart is a color copy of the French version, and was not calibrated at a professional printer's for color. So, this particular version is not a reliable representation of colors. (Husband's a professional graphic artist...he knows.) Not color calibrated= worthless. When we asked them about this issue, they said they printed at Staples.

There is a chart out there that is brought to a professional printer, and egg colors are approved by Bev, herself so there is consistency between printings. It's the chart that you get when joining the chicken club. Just ask when purchasing if the chart you're to purchase is a color copy of the French chart. There is a huge quality difference.
Thanks for this post. I always felt my chart (even though I ordered it from the club website) was not true to other charts I have seen.

Right. Plus... this chart is the more costly. Go figure.

Hi all. New to the Maran thread. I am a fan though. I am not a show person. I just raise chicken for fun and food. I have raised many breeds of the years. I have raised American Games, Dominiques, Polish, Jersey Giants, Cubalayas, Sebrights and Rhode Island Reds. In 2013 I bought a dozen FBCM eggs from a local gal and hatched them I ended up with a good trio (the rest died in a freak rain storm that flooded my chick pens). The were nice pretty birds. The pullets started laying around 5 months old and laid the biggest eggs I have ever seen. One laid nothing but double yoakers around 100 grams each. Here are some pics.

Eggs

Last year I traded some Dominique eggs for two dozen FBCM eggs from a guy over near Waco Texas. He said his line was from a five time award winning show line. Some of the bird turned out blue, so I guess they had some blue in there too. I had a really good 50/50 hatch and ended up with 22 birds. These birds are really nice. I don't have as lot of pics for them, just some of some cockerels I have for sale on craiglist. These birds lay eggs that are darker in in color then the others, but not as big. They also did not start laying until the were almost 7 months old.

Lovely trade!

Well, I am very excited. I set 7 Black Copper Marans eggs and we are finally at lock down today. This is our very first time to try hatching our eggs. Can't wait to see how it goes!!!

I just joined the marans chicken club usa last month and just received my welcome packet. The color chart I got has the eggs much darker than what I was expecting and it only shows the 4-9 colors. I was also expecting the background of the card to be white but it is actually a greyish blotchy color. They did say they had to get more printed and went back and forth with the printers until they got it right. I scanned the card using the photo setting on my scanner so this is pretty much what it looks like.

That looks about right and the reason they didn't include 1-3 is because then it is not a marans
