Gorgeous egg!!!
OK, I get confused by these types of eggs. When comparing to the Marans egg color chart, are they classified by the background shell color, the darkness of the speckles, or the average of the two colors?
Sounds like broken toe(s).Hello
Just got a few chicks to eventually add to our flock. The little Maran chick has what looks like a squished claw. It's purple and I feel awful she's just the tiniest lil chick. Any thoughts? Walking on it though a bit off balance.
Good thinking. Nice alternative to popsicle sticks or broken tooth picks and vetrap.@ IhilianiCoffee, make sure that the foot is clean, free of any sores, and dry before wrapping it up.My first chick from my incubator had a gimp claw. Was walking with the toes curled all under. I asked questions and done research and found a way to splint his toes out straight. When i take the splints off to change them, his toes are still crooked but not curled under.Look in emergencies/diseases/injuries and cures for more info. I used a pipe cleaner bent to shape of foot and since i didn't have vetrap on hand i used press n seal. It's like saran wrap but way better. He's wearing his new boot tonight.
I'm not the one with a purple-toed chick, that was Jilsc.Good thinking. Nice alternative to popsicle sticks or broken tooth picks and vetrap.@ IhilianiCoffee, make sure that the foot is clean, free of any sores, and dry before wrapping it up.
what incubator do you use?Down here in southeast LA, I use dry incubation with excellent results every time. Our humidity is usually no less than 30% anyway, so I do not have to add any water until hatch time. But I do leave the vent holes open so that the air inside can exchange with the air outside.
