Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I meant to say my lightest ones are a 4... In this hatch I have a couple of ones that are in between 7 and 8
Yes, that is what I would have guessed by the color in your photo. I simply smile in delight when seeing such dark eggs!

I think you should at least really know what you have and how to spell it.

Marans with an S always
Wheaten with an E
Ameraucanas without an I
Mille Fleur with just an e and not ie.
Cuckoo is one nobody seems to know how to spell either

I know there are more. I saw marans spelled MURAN and a feed store had to fix that. To me you lose some respect if you can spell the breeds you sell.

Yes I agree. Though in my username I spelled Mille Millie. I don't normally spell it that way, but I wanted to have all my usernames the same. I saw a ad on eBay for ''very show quality mille fleur d'uccles'' that that had been ''selectively bred for 50 years''. The birds had no beards, and poor coloring. The lady that was selling them apparently had no knowledge on the breed whatsoever.

That is so sad. It is as if they do not care to be in the know. Or maybe they are just chasing a dollar.I actually want a Mille or two to use as a broodies for hatching.

I though your name was Millie. But in your signature line at the bottom it's problematic.

Mille in French is thousand. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people "translate" mille fleur into "million flowers."

Just to really mess everyone up, the "n" in Marans isn't even really pronounced. "R" in French is not technically rolled like in Spanish, but a glottal stop in the back of the throat (think of choking on feathers or something!). So maybe the closest in "American" would be Meh-raw. Pronunciation is up for grabs to a degree, but spelling and capitalization is not. Call me a snob, but I don't take people as seriously when the breed name is incorrect and is used repeatedly as if it were. But I correct the "autocorrect" on my cell phone, so there you have it.

Very interesting. I've had a hard time deciding how it's pronounced as I don't get to talk chicken with people in person, only over the internet so I never hear it be said.
